Social media graphics: what the job involves

Designing graphics and short video templates for social media — posts, stories, reels covers, ads and profile banners — in the brand’s style, often as a batch or a monthly set. Posting and running ads is usually a separate marketing job.

Also asked for as: Instagram post design · social media designer · Canva templates for business · Facebook ad design · TikTok video templates

How the job is usually done

  1. Agree the brief: platforms, formats, how many posts per month, tone and the brand guide
  2. Agree the content plan or the text for each post with the customer
  3. Design a first set or editable templates in the brand’s colours and fonts
  4. Revise through the agreed rounds
  5. Export every graphic in the right size and format for each platform
  6. Deliver the files, or upload them to a scheduling tool if agreed

Social media graphics: what is included

Usually included

  • The agreed number of graphics or templates per batch or month
  • Sizes for each agreed platform (feed, story, cover)
  • An agreed number of revision rounds
  • Licensed stock images where agreed

Usually not included — agree it separately

  • Posting, scheduling, replying to comments and community management
  • Paid ad budgets and running ad campaigns
  • Photography and filming
  • Writing captions and hashtags, unless agreed
  • Animation or video editing beyond simple templates, unless agreed

Materials and who supplies them

  • Logo, brand guide, photos and product information — supplied by the customer
  • Stock images, music and fonts — licensed by the designer for the job, or by the customer
  • Design tool templates — in the customer’s account if they will edit them later

How long it takes

A first batch of templates usually takes one to two weeks; after that a monthly set is a few days’ work, provided the content plan and photos arrive on time.

When to book

Plan seasonal content — Christmas, Black Friday, St Patrick’s Day, back to school — at least a month ahead.

Social media graphics: the rules in Ireland

What the official sources say, checked against them on the date shown. A summary, not legal advice — follow the link to read the rule itself.

  • Marketing communications in Ireland, including social media posts and paid ads, are expected to follow the Advertising Standards Authority Code: they must be legal, decent, honest and truthful, and obviously identifiable as advertising. Where a brand pays or gifts an influencer, the brand is responsible for the post carrying a clear label such as #ad at the start.

Applies to: the business advertising, and anyone creating ads for it

Advertising Standards Authority (ASAI) — Code of Standards; Influencer guidance · adstandards.ie · Checked 10 October 2026

  • Copying or adapting a work without the licence of its copyright owner infringes the copyright. Stock photographs, illustrations, icons and fonts used in a design are somebody else’s work: they are used under the licence the designer or the customer bought, and that licence sets where, how often and for how long they may be used.

Applies to: the designer, and the customer who publishes the work

    Copyright and Related Rights Act 2000, section 37 · irishstatutebook.ie · Checked 10 October 2026

  • The author of a work — here the designer or illustrator — is the first owner of its copyright. The exception is an employee working in the course of employment, whose employer owns it. Paying a freelancer or a studio for the work does not by itself move the copyright to the customer.

Applies to: the designer, and the customer who commissions the work

    Copyright and Related Rights Act 2000, section 23 · irishstatutebook.ie · Checked 10 October 2026

  • An assignment of copyright, in whole or in part, is not effective unless it is in writing and signed by or on behalf of the person assigning it. If you need to own the design outright — to register it as a trade mark, to change it freely or to stop anyone else using it — get a signed written assignment, not just an invoice.

Applies to: the designer, and the customer who wants to own the work

    Copyright and Related Rights Act 2000, section 120(3) · irishstatutebook.ie · Checked 10 October 2026

What social media graphics costs, and why

What jobs on Talqero came to

Not enough comparable jobs yet to publish a range here. Talqero shows a price range only once at least five comparable jobs, agreed prices or offers exist — a range from fewer would describe a handful of jobs, not the market. Post your job and compare the offers you get.

What affects the price

  • Number of graphics per month and number of platforms
  • Static graphics, carousels or animated video
  • Whether captions and a content plan are included
  • Templates for the customer to reuse, or finished posts only
  • Stock images, music or illustration needed

What you should get at the end

  • Final graphics in the agreed sizes (PNG, JPG or MP4)
  • Editable templates in the customer’s design-tool account, if agreed
  • Licence details for stock images, music and fonts, including any limits on paid ads
  • A written note of copyright ownership or the licence granted

What the provider should hand over

  • Deliver the files named by date and platform, or confirm they are in the scheduling tool
  • Share the template links and transfer them to the customer’s account if agreed
  • List the licences of stock images and music, and where they may be used

Safety

  • Trending music on social platforms is often licensed for personal use only: business accounts and ads need music cleared for commercial use
  • Get written permission before posting photos of customers, staff or children
  • Keep your social account passwords to yourself: share access through the platform’s business tools, and remove it when the work ends

Social media graphics: before you hire

Questions to ask before you hire

  • How many graphics a month, and how many changes are included?
  • Will I get editable templates in my own account?
  • Are the images and music licensed for business use and for ads?
  • Is posting or scheduling included, or only the design?

What you can do yourself

With a good set of templates in an online design tool, most small businesses can make their own everyday posts and keep the designer for campaigns.

What to put in your task

  • Which platforms is it for?
  • How many posts or graphics do you need per month?
  • What kind of content?
  • Do you want templates you can edit yourself?
  • Do you need the captions written too?

Photos that help

  • Your brand guide, logo and fonts
  • Links to your social profiles
  • Photos of your products, premises or team you are happy to use
  • Accounts or posts you like the look of

Questions about social media graphics

Does social media graphics need a licence in Ireland?

No licence is required for this work in Ireland (source: www.irishstatutebook.ie). Ask instead for references and photographs of similar jobs.

Can I use any song from Instagram or TikTok in my business posts?

Not safely. Much of the music offered in the apps is licensed for personal accounts, and business accounts are often limited to a commercial sound library. For ads and branded videos, use music licensed for commercial use.

Do posts by influencers I pay need to say #ad?

Yes. The Advertising Standards Authority’s guidance says paid or gifted content must carry a clear label such as #ad or the platform’s paid-partnership label at the start, and the brand is responsible for making sure it does. Paying for editorial content without making it clear can also breach consumer protection law.

Is social media design the same as social media management?

No. Design produces the graphics; management covers planning, posting, replying to comments and running ads. Some freelancers offer both, so check which one the offer includes.
