Copywriting: what the job involves
Writing the words that sell and explain a business — website pages, product descriptions, ads, brochures, emails, blog articles and social captions — in a voice that suits the brand and the Irish customer. Good copy starts from what the customer needs to know, not from adjectives.
Also asked for as: copywriter · website copywriting · content writer · blog writer · product descriptions
How the job is usually done
- Agree the brief: what is being written, for whom, the goal, tone of voice, word count and deadline
- Gather the facts: services, prices, differences from competitors, proof such as real reviews and accreditations
- Research the audience and the searches they use, where SEO matters
- Write a first draft, often with a choice of headlines
- Revise within the agreed rounds, with all feedback from one person
- Proofread, check every claim against the facts supplied, and deliver in the agreed format
Copywriting: what is included
Usually included
- The agreed pieces of copy up to the agreed word count
- An agreed number of revision rounds
- Basic keyword use where it is web copy
- A final proofread
Usually not included — agree it separately
- Uploading the copy to the website, unless agreed
- Design, layout and images
- Translation into other languages
- Legal review of terms, claims or regulated wording — for example, financial or health claims
- Writing fake reviews or testimonials — never acceptable
Materials and who supplies them
- Facts, product details, prices and real customer reviews — supplied by the customer
- The brand’s tone of voice guide, if any — supplied by the customer
- Keyword and research tools — the writer’s
How long it takes
A few web pages or a set of product descriptions usually take one to two weeks including a revision round; a full website or a long brochure takes longer, and waiting for facts and feedback is the main delay.
When to book
Write the copy before the website is designed, so the design fits the words rather than the other way round.
Copywriting: the rules in Ireland
What the official sources say, checked against them on the date shown. A summary, not legal advice — follow the link to read the rule itself.
Marketing copy must not give false information, or be likely to deceive the average consumer, about matters such as the product’s main characteristics, the results to be expected, its price or the trader — if it would change their decision, it is a misleading commercial practice.
Applies to: the business publishing the copy
Consumer Protection Act 2007, section 43 · irishstatutebook.ie · Checked 10 October 2026
Writing, or commissioning anyone to write, false consumer reviews or endorsements to promote products is a prohibited practice in all circumstances. A copywriter must not be asked to write testimonials or reviews that real customers did not give.
Applies to: the business, and any writer it hires
Consumer Protection Act 2007, section 55(1)(zb), inserted by the Consumer Rights Act 2022, section 157 · irishstatutebook.ie · Checked 10 October 2026
Advertising copy in Ireland is expected to follow the Advertising Standards Authority Code: legal, decent, honest and truthful, with claims the advertiser can substantiate and advertising that is obviously identifiable as such.
Applies to: the advertiser, and the copywriter or agency
Advertising Standards Authority (ASAI) — Code of Standards for Advertising and Marketing Communications in Ireland · adstandards.ie · Checked 10 October 2026
The author of a written work — the copywriter, CV writer or translator — is the first owner of its copyright, unless they write it as an employee in the course of employment. Paying a freelancer does not by itself transfer the copyright to the customer.
Applies to: the writer, and the customer who commissions the text
Copyright and Related Rights Act 2000, section 23 · irishstatutebook.ie · Checked 10 October 2026
An assignment of copyright is not effective unless it is in writing and signed by or on behalf of the person assigning it. If you need to own the text outright — to edit, republish or resell it freely — ask for a signed written assignment.
Applies to: the writer, and the customer who wants to own the text
Copyright and Related Rights Act 2000, section 120(3) · irishstatutebook.ie · Checked 10 October 2026
The author also has moral rights — to be named as the author and to object to changes that would harm their reputation. These cannot be assigned, but can be waived in writing, signed by the author. Copywriting for a business is usually published unsigned, so a waiver is common.
Applies to: the writer, and the customer who will edit or publish the text
Copyright and Related Rights Act 2000, sections 107, 109, 116 and 118 · irishstatutebook.ie · Checked 10 October 2026
What copywriting costs, and why
What jobs on Talqero came to
Not enough comparable jobs yet to publish a range here. Talqero shows a price range only once at least five comparable jobs, agreed prices or offers exist — a range from fewer would describe a handful of jobs, not the market. Post your job and compare the offers you get.
What affects the price
- Number of pieces and total word count
- Research and interviews needed to get the facts
- Technical or specialist subject matter
- SEO keyword research and optimisation
- Rounds of revisions and number of people approving
- The deadline
What you should get at the end
- The final copy in the agreed format — Word or Google Doc, or entered in the website
- A signed written assignment of copyright, or the licence terms agreed
- A waiver of the right to be named, if agreed
- A note of keywords targeted on each page, for web copy
What the provider should hand over
- Deliver the final copy in the agreed format
- Send the copyright assignment or licence terms
- Note any claims the customer must be able to substantiate
Safety
- Ask whether the copy is the writer’s own work or produced with AI tools, and check facts in any AI-assisted text yourself
- Make sure every claim — "best", "cheapest", "guaranteed", "eco" — is something you can prove: you are responsible for what your copy says
- Do not let a writer copy competitors’ text: it can infringe their copyright and hurts SEO
Copywriting: before you hire
Questions to ask before you hire
- How many rounds of changes are included?
- Will you research my customers and keywords, or work from my notes?
- Will I own the copyright in the text?
- Do you use AI tools, and how do you check the facts?
- Can I see examples of copy you wrote for similar businesses?
What you can do yourself
Owners know their business best: writing a rough draft in your own words and asking a copywriter to edit it is often the best value.
What to put in your task
- What do you need written?
- Roughly how many words, or how many pages or items?
- Should it be written to rank on Google?
- Is the subject technical or specialist?
- When do you need the final copy?
Photos that help
- Your current website or materials, as links or files
- A short note on your services, customers and what makes you different
- Real customer reviews and accreditations you are allowed to quote
- Examples of copy and tone you like

Questions about copywriting
Does copywriting need a licence in Ireland?
No licence is required for this work in Ireland (source: www.irishstatutebook.ie). Ask instead for references and photographs of similar jobs.
Will I own the text I pay for?
Not automatically. Under Irish copyright law the writer owns the copyright unless it is assigned to you in writing and signed. Ask for a written assignment if you want to own the text outright.
Can a copywriter write reviews or testimonials for me?
No. Writing false reviews or endorsements to promote a business is a prohibited practice under Irish consumer law. A copywriter can help you ask real customers for reviews and quote them accurately with their permission.
Is AI-written copy good enough?
It can be a starting point, but it often gets facts wrong, sounds generic and may echo other people’s text. A good writer checks every claim and writes for your customers. Ask any writer how they use AI tools.
