Hiring a window fitter in Ireland
New windows and doors are made to measure, so the job is a survey, an order with a lead time of several weeks, then a day or two of fitting. Repairs — misted units, broken handles, locks that will not turn — are usually same-week work.
Window and door upgrades can be part of an SEAI-supported energy upgrade, which changes who you can hire: the contractor must be on SEAI’s register.
What the work usually involves
- Replacing windows and patio doors
- Front and back doors
- Misted or broken double-glazed units
- Locks, handles and hinges
What to put in your task
- How many windows or doors, and roughly how big
- The current frames: uPVC, timber or aluminium
- Whether it is a repair or a replacement
- Photos of each opening from inside and out
Windows and doors: rules and grants in Ireland
Grants
SEAI lists grants of up to €4,000 for windows and up to €1,600 for doors as part of its home energy upgrade grants.
- Check eligibility on SEAI’s grant pages before ordering: grants apply to specific schemes and house ages.
- Use a contractor on SEAI’s register and get grant approval before any work starts — work begun before approval is not grant-aided.
- The grant must be drawn down within eight months of the offer, and a BER by a registered assessor after the works is required (SEAI contributes €50 towards it).

What window and door fitters cost, and why
What jobs on Talqero came to
Not enough comparable jobs yet to publish a range here. Talqero shows a price range only once at least five comparable jobs, agreed prices or offers exist — a range from fewer would describe a handful of jobs, not the market. Post your job and compare the offers you get.
What affects the price
- Number and size of openings
- Material: uPVC, aluminium, timber or composite; double or triple glazing
- Making good reveals, sills and plaster
- Security hardware and glass specification
- VAT: building work on a home is charged at the reduced rate of 13.5% by a VAT-registered business — unless the materials come to more than two-thirds of the price, when Revenue’s two-thirds rule applies the goods rate to the whole job. Ask whether a quote includes VAT.
