Plumbers in Ireland
Plumbing: every service
- Bathroom installationRefitting a bathroom or en suite from bare walls: taking out the old suite, moving supplies and waste where needed, waterproofing and tiling, and fitting the new bath or shower, toilet, basin and taps.
- Drain unblockingClearing a blocked sink, toilet, bath or shower waste, or an outside gully or manhole, with plungers, rods or a high-pressure jet.
- Outside taps and garden plumbingFitting an outside tap or extending a water supply into the garden, for a hose, a car wash or watering.
- Plumbing repairsFixing the everyday faults in a home’s water system: dripping taps, a toilet cistern that keeps running, leaking joints under a sink, a burst or weeping pipe, low pressure or knocking pipes.
- Shower installationFitting a new shower or replacing a failed one: an electric shower, a mixer off the hot water, or a pumped shower, with the tray, enclosure and waste.
- Water tanks and cylindersReplacing the cold-water storage tank in the attic or the hot water cylinder in the hot press, or its immersion element.
Hiring a plumber in Ireland
Plumbing runs from emergencies — a burst pipe, a toilet that will not stop running — to planned work like a new bathroom or an outside tap. Unlike electrical and gas work, plumbing has no statutory register in Ireland, so references and photographs of similar jobs matter more.
Two boundaries are worth knowing: an electric shower needs its own circuit, which is restricted electrical work for a registered electrician, and anything on a gas boiler is reserved to a Registered Gas Installer.
What the work usually involves
- Leaks, dripping taps and running toilets
- Unblocking sinks, toilets and outside drains
- Shower and full bathroom installation
- Hot water cylinders, tanks and outside taps
What to put in your task
- Where the problem is and what it is doing
- Whether water is leaking now, and whether you can turn it off
- For a bathroom: rough sizes and what stays or goes
- Two or three photos — they save a site visit
Plumbing: rules and grants in Ireland
The rules in Ireland
There is no licence for plumbers in Ireland, but the electrical and gas work that often comes with plumbing is regulated.
- A new circuit for an electric shower or a heated towel rail is Restricted Electrical Works: a Registered Electrical Contractor must do it and issue a Completion Certificate.
- Work on a gas boiler or gas hob is reserved to a Registered Gas Installer, who must leave a Declaration of Conformance.

What plumbers cost, and why
What jobs on Talqero came to
Not enough comparable jobs yet to publish a range here. Talqero shows a price range only once at least five comparable jobs, agreed prices or offers exist — a range from fewer would describe a handful of jobs, not the market. Post your job and compare the offers you get.
What affects the price
- Urgency: an emergency call-out costs more than a booked visit
- Access to the pipework — behind tiles, under floors or in boxing
- For a bathroom: whether fittings move, tiling, and who supplies the suite
- Water pressure and the hot-water system, which decide the right shower
- VAT: building work on a home is charged at the reduced rate of 13.5% by a VAT-registered business — unless the materials come to more than two-thirds of the price, when Revenue’s two-thirds rule applies the goods rate to the whole job. Ask whether a quote includes VAT.
How long it usually takes
- Most repairs and blockages: an hour or two.
- A shower swap: a day; a new shower with tray and tiling: two to four days.
- A full bathroom: one to three weeks from strip-out to finish.
What to ask before you choose
- Can you price it from photos, or do you need to visit?
- Who supplies the fittings, and is their warranty yours or the manufacturer’s?
- Who does the electrical or gas part of the job, and are they registered?
- What happens if you find more once the floor is up?
- Is VAT included?

Questions about hiring a plumber
What rules apply to plumbing work in Ireland?
There is no licence for plumbers in Ireland, but the electrical and gas work that often comes with plumbing is regulated.
How long does plumbing work take?
Most repairs and blockages: an hour or two. A shower swap: a day; a new shower with tray and tiling: two to four days. A full bathroom: one to three weeks from strip-out to finish.
What should I do while I wait for a plumber?
If water is escaping, turn off the stopcock — usually under the kitchen sink — and switch off the immersion. Then post the task with photos.
Will a plumber quote without seeing the job?
For small repairs often yes, from good photos. For a bathroom most will want to visit; agree that in the conversation before you accept.
Does Talqero recommend a plumber?
No. Offers appear in the order they arrive and you choose. We do not rank, recommend or suggest prices.
