Video editing: what the job involves

Turning your raw footage into a finished video: cutting, sequencing, colour, sound, music, captions and graphics, for social media, YouTube, a website, an event or a family keepsake, delivered remotely as files.

Also asked for as: video editor · video editing service · edit my video · YouTube video editor · wedding video editing

How the job is usually done

  1. Agree the purpose, length, style, platforms and deadline, with reference videos.
  2. Receive the footage and any logos, music and scripts through a shared drive or transfer link.
  3. Assemble a rough cut and share it for feedback.
  4. Refine: pacing, colour correction, sound clean-up, licensed music, captions and graphics.
  5. Share the near-final cut for the agreed rounds of changes.
  6. Export the final video in the formats and aspect ratios agreed, with captions files if ordered.

Video editing: what is included

Usually included

  • Editing to the agreed length and style

  • The agreed number of revision rounds and final exports

Usually not included — agree it separately

  • Filming, which is a separate service
  • Premium music, stock footage or voice-over, unless agreed
  • Complex animation or visual effects

Materials and who supplies them

  • Raw footage, logos and brand assets, supplied by the customer
  • Music and stock footage, licensed by the editor or the customer for the agreed use

How long it takes

A short social clip can often be turned round in a few days; a longer edit with several review rounds usually takes one to three weeks.

Video editing: the rules in Ireland

What the official sources say, checked against them on the date shown. A summary, not legal advice — follow the link to read the rule itself.

  • The photographer or filmmaker, as author, is the first owner of copyright in the images or footage, unless they made them as an employee in the course of employment. Paying for a shoot does not by itself transfer copyright; the customer gets whatever licence the contract gives.

Applies to: the photographer and the customer

    Copyright and Related Rights Act 2000, section 23 · irishstatutebook.ie · Checked 10 October 2026

  • An assignment of copyright, in whole or in part, is not effective unless it is in writing and signed by or on behalf of the person assigning it. A customer who needs to own the work, rather than use it under licence, needs a signed written assignment.

Applies to: the photographer and the customer

    Copyright and Related Rights Act 2000, section 120 · irishstatutebook.ie · Checked 10 October 2026

  • Copying, making available to the public or adapting a copyright work needs the owner’s licence. Commercial music, stock footage, fonts and other people’s photographs used in a video or design need a licence that covers that use.

Applies to: the editor or producer, and the customer who publishes the work

    Copyright and Related Rights Act 2000, section 37 · irishstatutebook.ie · Checked 10 October 2026

  • A photograph or video in which a person can be identified is personal data. A business or photographer using it, for example on a website or in advertising, needs a lawful basis such as consent or legitimate interests, must tell people how it will be used, and must respect a withdrawal of consent.

Applies to: the business publishing the images, and the photographer

What video editing costs, and why

What jobs on Talqero came to

Not enough comparable jobs yet to publish a range here. Talqero shows a price range only once at least five comparable jobs, agreed prices or offers exist — a range from fewer would describe a handful of jobs, not the market. Post your job and compare the offers you get.

What affects the price

  • Finished length in minutes and the amount of raw footage
  • Number of versions and aspect ratios
  • Captions, graphics, animation and colour grading
  • Licensed music, stock footage and voice-over
  • Rounds of revisions and the deadline

What you should get at the end

  • Final video files in the agreed formats and aspect ratios
  • Captions or subtitle files, if ordered
  • Licences or receipts for music and stock footage used
  • A written licence or assignment for the edit, and confirmation the editor will delete your raw footage after an agreed period

What the provider should hand over

  • Deliver the final exports and caption files
  • Hand over music and stock licences
  • Confirm the licence for the edit and when raw footage will be deleted

Safety

  • Do not ask an editor to use a chart song or film clip you have no licence for; platforms mute or remove it and the owner can claim.
  • Footage of identifiable people, especially children or staff, needs their agreement before it is published.

Video editing: before you hire

Questions to ask before you hire

  • How many rounds of changes are included?
  • Where does the music come from, and does its licence cover ads?
  • Will I get the project files, or only the finished video?
  • Can you deliver vertical versions for social media too?

What you can do yourself

Free phone apps handle simple trims and captions for social media; a polished business video with licensed music and colour is where an editor earns their keep.

What to put in your task

  • What is the video for?
  • How long should the finished video be?
  • Roughly how much raw footage is there?
  • What else does it need?
  • Where will the images or video be used?

Photos that help

  • A sample clip or screenshot of the footage, showing quality and format
  • Links to videos in the style you want
  • Your brand guide, logo and fonts
  • Script, running order or notes of the best moments

Questions about video editing

Does video editing need a licence in Ireland?

No licence is required for this work in Ireland (source: www.irishstatutebook.ie). Ask instead for references and photographs of similar jobs.

Can I use a popular song in my video?

Only with a licence covering that use. Copying or making a copyright work available to the public without the owner’s licence infringes copyright, and social platforms routinely mute or remove such videos. Editors use licensed production music instead.

Who owns the finished edit?

The editor owns copyright in their editing work unless it is assigned in signed writing, and you own your footage. Agree a licence or assignment that lets you use and reuse the edit as you need.

How do I send the footage?

Usually through a shared cloud folder or a file-transfer service, or on a drive by post for very large projects. Keep your own copy until the job is finished.
