Painting and decorating
Painters and decorators in Ireland
Painting and decorating: every service
- Exterior paintingPainting the outside of a house — rendered or pebble-dashed walls, fascia, soffits, windows, doors and railings — with the access equipment needed to reach them safely.
- Interior paintingPainting the inside of a home — walls, ceilings, woodwork, doors and radiators — including the filling, sanding and protecting that make the paint last.
- Plastering and skimmingPutting a smooth new finish on walls and ceilings — a thin skim over existing plaster or board, patching damaged areas, or slabbing and plastering new or stud walls.
- Spray painting and finishesSpraying a smooth, factory-like finish onto kitchen doors and units, internal doors, wardrobes, radiators, uPVC windows and front doors.
- WallpaperingStripping old wallpaper and hanging new paper or a feature wall, with the walls prepared and lined so the joins stay closed and the pattern lines up.
Hiring a painter in Ireland
Painting and decorating is mostly preparation: filling, sanding, priming and protecting floors and furniture take longer than the paint. A quote that is much cheaper than the others has often left the preparation out.
Exterior work depends on the weather — dry days above about five degrees — so it is usually booked from late spring to early autumn.
What the work usually involves
- Interior walls, ceilings, doors and woodwork
- Exterior walls, fascias and windows
- Wallpapering and stripping old paper
- Plastering and skimming before painting
What to put in your task
- Which rooms or walls, and roughly how big they are
- The state of the surfaces — cracks, damp, old paper
- Whether you will choose and supply the paint
- Whether the rooms will be empty or furnished
What painters and decorators cost, and why
What jobs on Talqero came to
Not enough comparable jobs yet to publish a range here. Talqero shows a price range only once at least five comparable jobs, agreed prices or offers exist — a range from fewer would describe a handful of jobs, not the market. Post your job and compare the offers you get.
What affects the price
- Preparation: cracks, damp stains, wallpaper removal, new plaster
- Ceiling heights, stairwells and scaffolding for exteriors
- Number of colours and coats, and woodwork, doors and radiators
- Paint supplied by the painter or by you
- VAT: building work on a home is charged at the reduced rate of 13.5% by a VAT-registered business — unless the materials come to more than two-thirds of the price, when Revenue’s two-thirds rule applies the goods rate to the whole job. Ask whether a quote includes VAT.
How long it usually takes
- A room: one to two days with woodwork.
- A house interior: one to two weeks.
- An exterior: three days to a week, weather allowing.
What to ask before you choose
- What preparation is included, and how many coats?
- Which paint and finish will you use?
- Is woodwork included, and are ceilings?
- For outside: what happens if it rains on the day?
- Is VAT included?

Questions about hiring a painter
How long does painting and decorating work take?
A room: one to two days with woodwork. A house interior: one to two weeks. An exterior: three days to a week, weather allowing.
How long does a room take?
It depends on preparation more than painting. Ask each decorator how long they expect, and compare that along with the price.
When is the best time for exterior painting?
Dry, mild months. Post early — exterior work in Ireland books up quickly once the weather settles.
Can I ask for a colour sample first?
Yes. Agree it in the conversation before you accept an offer.
