Oven and hob repair: what the job involves

Repairing an electric oven, cooker or hob: elements that do not heat, a fan that will not run, a thermostat or timer that is wrong, a door that will not close, or a ceramic or induction hob that cuts out. Any gas cooker or hob work is a separate job for a Registered Gas Installer.

Also asked for as: oven repair · cooker repair · oven not heating · oven fan not working · induction hob repair

How the job is usually done

  1. Confirm whether the appliance is electric, gas or dual fuel — gas work goes to a Registered Gas Installer.
  2. Agree make, model and symptoms, and check the cooker switch and fuse board are on.
  3. Isolate the power at the cooker switch and test the elements, fan, thermostat and switches.
  4. Find the failed part and agree the repair price.
  5. Fit the part, reconnect and run the oven or hob to temperature.
  6. Check the door seal and hinges and that the appliance sits securely.

Oven and hob repair: what is included

Usually included

  • Diagnosis and electrical safety checks on the appliance
  • Fitting the agreed part
  • Testing at temperature

Usually not included — agree it separately

  • Any work on a gas cooker or gas hob, which needs a Registered Gas Installer
  • A new cooker circuit or moving the cooker switch, which is restricted electrical work
  • Replacing a cracked worktop around a hob
  • Oven cleaning

Materials and who supplies them

  • Elements, fan motors, thermostats, switches, door seals and hinges: supplied by the engineer
  • A new glass hob top or induction board, where the part is still made

How long it takes

One to two hours for most repairs; longer for a built-in oven that has to come out or an induction hob board ordered from the manufacturer.

When to book

Book well before Christmas: oven engineers are busiest in December.

Oven and hob repair: the rules in Ireland

What the official sources say, checked against them on the date shown. A summary, not legal advice — follow the link to read the rule itself.

  • Only a Registered Gas Installer may install, repair, service or disconnect a gas cooker, hob or oven, and they must leave a Declaration of Conformance; you can check their RGI card and the register.

Applies to: anyone working on a gas appliance

Register of Gas Installers of Ireland, under the Commission for Regulation of Utilities · rgi.ie · Checked 9 October 2026

  • A new circuit for an oven or induction hob, or a new cooker control point, is Restricted Electrical Works and must be done and certified by a Registered Electrical Contractor.

Applies to: anyone altering the fixed wiring

Safe Electric Ireland, under the Commission for Regulation of Utilities · safeelectric.ie · Checked 9 October 2026

  • If a machine develops a fault that was not caused by misuse, the seller — not the manufacturer or a repairer — must put it right: a refund within 30 days, and after that a free repair or replacement, or a refund for a serious fault. Check this before paying for a repair on a newer machine.

Applies to: the retailer who sold the appliance

Consumer Rights Act 2022, Competition and Consumer Protection Commission · ccpc.ie · Checked 9 October 2026

  • When you buy a replacement, the retailer must take back the old appliance free of charge on a one-for-one, like-for-like basis, including collection when the new one is delivered; old appliances can also go free to a civic amenity site.

Applies to: retailers of electrical goods, and the householder disposing of an appliance

    WEEE Regulations, S.I. 149 of 2014 · citizensinformation.ie · Checked 9 October 2026

  • Repair and maintenance of movable goods, which includes domestic appliances, is charged at the reduced rate of VAT by a VAT-registered engineer, subject to the two-thirds rule when parts are most of the bill.

    Applies to: VAT-registered repairers

What oven and hob repair costs, and why

What jobs on Talqero came to

Not enough comparable jobs yet to publish a range here. Talqero shows a price range only once at least five comparable jobs, agreed prices or offers exist — a range from fewer would describe a handful of jobs, not the market. Post your job and compare the offers you get.

What affects the price

  • Electric, ceramic or induction — induction boards cost more and take longer
  • The part and its availability
  • Built-in units that have to be pulled out of the housing
  • Range cookers and double ovens
  • Make, model and age

Paperwork to ask for at the end

  • An invoice listing the fault and parts
  • For any gas work: the Registered Gas Installer’s Declaration of Conformance
  • For any new circuit: the Safe Electric Completion Certificate

Safety

  • If you smell gas, do not use switches; open windows, turn off the gas at the meter and call Gas Networks Ireland on 1800 20 50 50.
  • A fault that trips the fuse board every time the oven heats is usually an element shorting to earth — leave it off until it is checked.
  • A cracked glass or ceramic hob should not be used: liquid can reach live parts.

Oven and hob repair: before you hire

Questions to ask a tradesperson

  • Do you repair induction hobs?
  • Is the call-out charge part of the repair price?
  • If it is gas, are you a Registered Gas Installer?
  • Is it worth repairing, or should I replace it?

What you can do yourself

Replacing an oven light bulb or a removable door seal is fine with the power off; elements, wiring and anything gas are not.

What to put in your task

  • Is it electric or gas?
  • What is wrong?
  • Is the oven built in or freestanding?
  • What make is it, and how old?

Photos that help

  • The rating plate (inside the door edge or the frame)
  • The control panel and any error display
  • The hob from above, showing any cracks
  • The cooker switch on the wall

Questions about oven and hob repair

Does oven and hob repair need a licence in Ireland?

No licence is required for this work in Ireland (source: www.cru.ie). Ask instead for references and photographs of similar jobs.

Can an appliance engineer fix my gas hob?

Only if they are a Registered Gas Installer. Any work on a gas appliance in Ireland is restricted, and the installer must leave a Declaration of Conformance.

Why does my oven trip the electrics?

Most often a heating element has failed and is leaking to earth, which trips the RCD. Leave it switched off at the cooker switch until an engineer tests it.

Is an induction hob worth repairing?

Often, if the fault is one zone or a fan. A failed main board or a cracked glass top can cost close to a new hob, and an engineer should tell you before ordering parts.
