Dishwasher repair: what the job involves
Repairing a dishwasher that will not fill, drain, heat, dry or clean, leaks, or stops with an error code. Most faults are pumps, heaters, float switches, door seals or the control board, and many are fixed in one visit.
Also asked for as: dishwasher not draining · dishwasher not cleaning · dishwasher leaking · dishwasher error code · integrated dishwasher repair
How the job is usually done
- Agree make, model, age and the symptom, with any error code.
- Run a test cycle and read the fault code.
- Check filters, spray arms, the drain hose, the sump and the anti-flood float first.
- Find the failed part: drain or circulation pump, heater, inlet valve, door seal or board.
- Agree the price of the repair before going ahead.
- Fit the part, run a cycle and check for leaks under the base.
Dishwasher repair: what is included
Usually included
- Diagnosis and test cycle
- Cleaning the filters and sump
- Fitting the agreed part and testing
Usually not included — agree it separately
- The part itself, priced after diagnosis
- New plumbing or waste connections
- Refitting kitchen plinths or décor panels damaged earlier
- Disposal of the old machine
Materials and who supplies them
- Spare parts: supplied by the engineer
- Filters, seals and spray arms, which the customer can also buy
How long it takes

Dishwasher repair: the rules in Ireland
What the official sources say, checked against them on the date shown. A summary, not legal advice — follow the link to read the rule itself.
If a machine develops a fault that was not caused by misuse, the seller — not the manufacturer or a repairer — must put it right: a refund within 30 days, and after that a free repair or replacement, or a refund for a serious fault. Check this before paying for a repair on a newer machine.
Applies to: the retailer who sold the appliance

A manufacturer’s guarantee or a paid extended warranty is in addition to your statutory rights; a repair by an outside engineer during the guarantee period can void it, so check the terms first.

For household dishwashers on the EU market since March 2021, manufacturers must make parts such as pumps, heaters, control boards and sensors available to professional repairers for at least seven years after the last unit, and door hinges, seals, spray arms, filters and racks for at least 10 years.
Applies to: manufacturers and importers

When you buy a replacement, the retailer must take back the old appliance free of charge on a one-for-one, like-for-like basis, including collection when the new one is delivered; old appliances can also go free to a civic amenity site.

Questions about dishwasher repair
Does dishwasher repair need a licence in Ireland?
No licence is required for this work in Ireland (source: www.cru.ie). Ask instead for references and photographs of similar jobs.
Why is my dishwasher not draining?
The filter in the base is often blocked with food or glass, or the drain hose is kinked where it meets the sink waste. If both are clear, the drain pump may have failed.
Why are my dishes coming out dirty?
Usually blocked spray arms, a dirty filter, too little detergent or no salt in a hard-water area. If the water is not getting hot, the heater or its sensor may have failed.
Can I get parts for an older dishwasher?
For newer models, EU rules require manufacturers to keep key parts available to repairers for years after a model stops being sold. Very old or discontinued machines can be harder to source.
