Washing machine repair: what the job involves

Diagnosing and repairing a washing machine, washer-dryer or tumble dryer that will not drain, spin, heat, open or start, or that leaks or shows an error code. An honest engineer tells you when the repair is not worth it against the age of the machine.

Also asked for as: washing machine not draining · washing machine not spinning · washer dryer repair · tumble dryer repair · washing machine leaking

How the job is usually done

  1. Agree the make, model, age and symptoms over chat, including any error code.
  2. On site, run a test cycle and read fault codes to confirm the fault.
  3. Check the simple causes first: drain filter, pump, hoses, door lock and the power supply.
  4. Diagnose the failed part — pump, heater, door interlock, carbon brushes, belt, bearings or control board.
  5. Price the repair against the machine’s age and value before doing it.
  6. Fit the part, run a full test cycle and check for leaks.

Washing machine repair: what is included

Usually included

  • Diagnosis and test cycle
  • Clearing the drain filter and pump
  • Fitting the agreed part and testing

Usually not included — agree it separately

  • The part itself, priced once the fault is known
  • Moving a heavy machine up or down stairs, or out of a tight space without help
  • Plumbing new supplies or a new waste, which is plumbing work
  • Disposal of the old machine

Materials and who supplies them

  • Spare parts: supplied by the engineer, original or approved equivalent — ask which
  • Hoses and drain filters: often carried in the van

How long it takes

Usually an hour or two; a second visit if a part has to be ordered, and longer for drum bearings or integrated machines.

Washing machine repair: the rules in Ireland

What the official sources say, checked against them on the date shown. A summary, not legal advice — follow the link to read the rule itself.

  • If a machine develops a fault that was not caused by misuse, the seller — not the manufacturer or a repairer — must put it right: a refund within 30 days, and after that a free repair or replacement, or a refund for a serious fault. Check this before paying for a repair on a newer machine.

Applies to: the retailer who sold the appliance

Consumer Rights Act 2022, Competition and Consumer Protection Commission · ccpc.ie · Checked 9 October 2026

  • A manufacturer’s guarantee or a paid extended warranty is in addition to your statutory rights; a repair by an outside engineer during the guarantee period can void it, so check the terms first.

    Applies to: the appliance owner

    Competition and Consumer Protection Commission · ccpc.ie · Checked 9 October 2026

  • For washing machines and washer-dryers on the EU market since March 2021, manufacturers must make key spare parts such as motors, pumps, heaters, bearings and control boards available to professional repairers for at least 10 years after the last unit of a model, delivered within 15 working days.

    Applies to: manufacturers and importers

    Commission Regulation (EU) 2019/2023 (ecodesign) · eur-lex.europa.eu · Checked 9 October 2026

  • When you buy a replacement, the retailer must take back the old appliance free of charge on a one-for-one, like-for-like basis, including collection when the new one is delivered; old appliances can also go free to a civic amenity site.

Applies to: retailers of electrical goods, and the householder disposing of an appliance

    WEEE Regulations, S.I. 149 of 2014 · citizensinformation.ie · Checked 9 October 2026

  • Repair and maintenance of movable goods, which includes domestic appliances, is charged at the reduced rate of VAT by a VAT-registered engineer, subject to the two-thirds rule when parts are most of the bill.

    Applies to: VAT-registered repairers

  • Repairing an electric domestic appliance is not a restricted trade in Ireland. What is restricted is gas work (Registered Gas Installers) and new electrical circuits or work in the fixed wiring (Registered Electrical Contractors).

What washing machine repair costs, and why

What jobs on Talqero came to

Not enough comparable jobs yet to publish a range here. Talqero shows a price range only once at least five comparable jobs, agreed prices or offers exist — a range from fewer would describe a handful of jobs, not the market. Post your job and compare the offers you get.

What affects the price

  • The fault: a blocked pump is quick, drum bearings are not
  • Make, model and age, which decide part price and availability
  • Integrated machines that come out of the kitchen units
  • Washer-dryers, which have more to go wrong
  • Call-out and diagnosis, often charged even if you decide not to repair

Paperwork to ask for at the end

  • An invoice listing the fault, the parts fitted and their guarantee
  • If the machine is not worth repairing, a short written diagnosis for an insurer or retailer

Safety

  • Unplug the machine before opening the drain filter, and expect a lot of water.
  • A door that will not open usually has water in the drum or a locked interlock — do not force it.
  • Tumble dryers need their lint filter cleaned every load; a blocked filter is a fire risk.

Washing machine repair: before you hire

Questions to ask a tradesperson

  • Is the call-out charge deducted if I go ahead with the repair?
  • Are the parts original manufacturer parts?
  • What guarantee do I get on the part and the labour?
  • Is it worth repairing at this age?

What you can do yourself

Cleaning the drain filter and checking hoses are safe DIY with the machine unplugged; anything inside the cabinet is for an engineer.

What to put in your task

  • Which machine is it?
  • What is it doing?
  • What make is it, and how old?
  • Is it freestanding or built into the kitchen?
  • Is there an error code on the display?

Photos that help

  • The rating plate inside the door or on the back, showing model and serial number
  • The display with any error code
  • Where the machine sits, showing access around it
  • Any leak or water under the machine

Questions about washing machine repair

Does washing machine repair need a licence in Ireland?

No licence is required for this work in Ireland (source: www.cru.ie). Ask instead for references and photographs of similar jobs.

Is it worth repairing my washing machine?

Often yes for pumps, door locks, brushes and heaters. Drum bearings on a machine with a sealed drum can cost close to a new machine, and a good engineer tells you so before starting.

My machine is under two years old — should I pay for a repair?

Check first with the shop you bought it from. Under consumer law the seller must repair or replace a machine with a fault that was not caused by misuse, and an outside repair may void the guarantee.

Why will my washing machine not drain?

Most often the drain filter or pump is blocked by a coin, sock or hair grip, or the waste hose is kinked. If clearing them does not help, the pump has probably failed.
