Oven cleaning: what the job involves

A specialist deep clean of an oven, hob and extractor, taking out racks, trays and removable panels and stripping the burnt-on carbon with non-caustic products. It brings a cooker back close to new without the fumes of a DIY oven spray.

Also asked for as: oven cleaner · range cooker cleaning · aga cleaning · extractor fan cleaning · hob cleaning

How the job is usually done

  1. Check the make, model and fuel, and note any faults before starting
  2. Protect the floor and worktops
  3. Remove racks, trays, shelf supports and, where designed to, the door glass and fan cover
  4. Soak the removable parts in a heated dip tank
  5. Clean the inside, door seals, glass and controls by hand
  6. Clean the hob and extractor, replacing or degreasing filters if agreed
  7. Refit everything, run the oven briefly and leave it ready to use

Oven cleaning: what is included

Usually included

  • Inside the oven, racks, trays and shelf supports
  • Door glass, inside and out
  • Control panel and knobs

Usually not included — agree it separately

  • Hob and extractor, unless added
  • Moving a gas cooker or disconnecting it — that is gas work for a Registered Gas Installer
  • Repairs to elements, fans, seals or thermostats
  • Self-cleaning (pyrolytic) or catalytic liners, which need different care

Materials and who supplies them

  • Heated dip tank and non-caustic products — the cleaner’s
  • Replacement extractor filters, if wanted — usually ordered by the customer

How long it takes

Two to three hours for a single oven; a double oven, a range cooker or a heavily carbonised oven takes longer.

When to book

Before Christmas, before selling a house, and at the end of a tenancy are the busiest times, so book a few weeks ahead.

Oven cleaning: the rules in Ireland

What the official sources say, checked against them on the date shown. A summary, not legal advice — follow the link to read the rule itself.

  • Disconnecting, moving or reconnecting a gas cooker or hob is gas work that only a Registered Gas Installer may carry out. An oven cleaner should clean a gas cooker in place, not pull it out on its gas hose.

What oven cleaning costs, and why

What jobs on Talqero came to

Not enough comparable jobs yet to publish a range here. Talqero shows a price range only once at least five comparable jobs, agreed prices or offers exist — a range from fewer would describe a handful of jobs, not the market. Post your job and compare the offers you get.

What affects the price

  • Single, double or range cooker
  • How heavily carbonised the inside is
  • Adding the hob, extractor hood or microwave
  • An AGA or range cooker, which takes much longer

Paperwork to ask for at the end

  • A receipt listing the appliances cleaned

Safety

  • Do not use the oven while parts are out, and let the cleaner refit everything
  • Caustic oven sprays can damage seals and burn skin; professional products are usually non-caustic
  • Never pull out a gas cooker to clean behind it — the gas connection needs a Registered Gas Installer

Oven cleaning: before you hire

Questions to ask a tradesperson

  • Do you use caustic products?
  • Is the hob or extractor included?
  • Will you take the door glass out?
  • What happens if a part breaks while you are cleaning?

What you can do yourself

Wiping out a lightly used oven is easy; heavily carbonised ovens, door glass and fan covers are where a professional with a dip tank is worth it.

What to put in your task

  • What kind of oven is it?
  • Anything else at the same visit?
  • How long since it was last cleaned properly?
  • Is it gas, electric or dual fuel?

Photos that help

  • The inside of the oven with the door open
  • The door glass
  • The hob and extractor, if they are included
  • The model plate or label inside the door

Questions about oven cleaning

Does oven cleaning need a licence in Ireland?

No licence is required for this work in Ireland (source: www.cru.ie). Ask instead for references and photographs of similar jobs.

Can I use the oven straight after it is cleaned?

Usually yes, once it has been run briefly to burn off any residue. Professional products are non-caustic and food-safe once dry.

Can you clean a pyrolytic oven?

Yes, but the inside should not be scrubbed with abrasives, because the coating is designed for its own cleaning cycle. The racks, glass and door are usually what need the work.

Will you move my cooker to clean behind it?

An electric freestanding cooker can usually be pulled out carefully. A gas cooker should not be moved by anyone but a Registered Gas Installer, because of the gas connection.
