Man with a van: what the job involves

A van and a driver, sometimes with a helper, for a small move, a single item, a marketplace collection or a delivery. It is quick to book and charged by the hour or the job, so being ready and clear about what is going saves the most.

Also asked for as: man and van · van hire with driver · small removals · furniture delivery · marketplace collection

How the job is usually done

  1. Describe what is being moved, from where to where, and the stairs at both ends.
  2. Agree the price basis — fixed for the job, or by the hour — and whether a second person is coming.
  3. The driver arrives, protects the item and loads it with straps and blankets.
  4. Transport, with collection payment or paperwork handled as arranged for a marketplace item.
  5. Unloading and carrying into the room you want.

Man with a van: what is included

Usually included

  • Loading, transport and unloading of the agreed items
  • Blankets and straps to protect them

Usually not included — agree it separately

  • Dismantling or assembling flat-pack, unless agreed
  • Taking rubbish to the dump, unless the operator holds a waste collection permit
  • Packing
  • Waiting time beyond what was agreed

Materials and who supplies them

  • The van, trolley, blankets and straps — the driver’s own

How long it takes

Usually an hour or two; a studio move or several collections takes half a day, and stairs or waiting at either end add time.

When to book

Weekends and month-ends are busiest; mid-week slots are easier to get at short notice.

Man with a van: the rules in Ireland

What the official sources say, checked against them on the date shown. A summary, not legal advice — follow the link to read the rule itself.

  • Taking unwanted items or rubbish away for reward is waste collection and needs a waste collection permit — a removal van without one may move your belongings but may not take your waste.

    Applies to: the van operator

Waste Management Act 1996, section 34; National Waste Collection Permit Office · revisedacts.lawreform.ie · Checked 9 October 2026

  • Before you agree, the trader must give the total price or how it will be calculated, and any extra charges; the service must be supplied with reasonable care and skill, and as described.

Applies to: the removals company or van operator

    Consumer Rights Act 2022; Citizens Information · citizensinformation.ie · Checked 9 October 2026

  • Since 21 May 2022, an operator carrying goods internationally for hire or reward in a light commercial vehicle over 2.5 tonnes must hold an international Road Transport Operator Licence — relevant to a move to Northern Ireland, Britain or further.

Applies to: the removals company or van operator

    Regulation (EU) 2020/1055; Department of Transport · gov.ie · Checked 9 October 2026

What man with a van costs, and why

What jobs on Talqero came to

Not enough comparable jobs yet to publish a range here. Talqero shows a price range only once at least five comparable jobs, agreed prices or offers exist — a range from fewer would describe a handful of jobs, not the market. Post your job and compare the offers you get.

What affects the price

  • Time and distance
  • One person or two for heavy items
  • Stairs and lifts at both ends
  • Parking and loading restrictions
  • Evening, weekend or same-day booking

Paperwork to ask for at the end

  • A receipt with the operator’s name and contact details

Safety

  • If you are helping lift, agree who is lifting what before starting, and lift with the driver, not alone.
  • Measure doors, stairs and the item before booking — a sofa that will not go round the stairs is a wasted trip.
  • Do not ride in the back of the van.

Man with a van: before you hire

Questions to ask a tradesperson

  • Is the price fixed or hourly, and when does the clock start?
  • Will you bring a second person if needed?
  • Do you have cover for goods in transit?
  • If I have rubbish too, do you hold a waste collection permit?

What you can do yourself

Hiring a van yourself works for light loads if you have help to lift; a driver with a trolley and blankets is safer for anything heavy or going up stairs.

What to put in your task

  • What needs moving?
  • How far is it?
  • Will you need a second person to lift?
  • Are there stairs at either end?

Photos that help

  • The items, with a tape measure or something for scale
  • The stairs or doorways they must go through

Questions about man with a van

Does man with a van need a licence in Ireland?

No licence is required for this work in Ireland (source: www.cru.ie). Ask instead for references and photographs of similar jobs.

Can a man with a van take my rubbish to the dump?

Only if they hold a waste collection permit. Taking waste away for payment without one is illegal, and if it is dumped and traced to you, you are responsible. Ask for the permit number.

Is a man with a van insured for my things?

Not automatically. Many carry goods-in-transit cover, but limits vary. For anything valuable, ask before booking.

Man with a van or a removals company?

A van suits a few items, a student or studio move, or a collection. For a whole house, a removals company brings a bigger vehicle, a crew, packing and a survey, so the day is predictable.
