Furniture assembly: what the job involves

Assembling flat-pack wardrobes, beds, desks, chests and units, and fixing tall or heavy furniture to the wall so it cannot tip over. Assembly from the big flat-pack retailers is routine for an experienced assembler and much faster than doing it yourself.

Also asked for as: flat pack assembly · ikea assembly · wardrobe assembly · bed assembly · flatpack builder

How the job is usually done

  1. Confirm the items, their product names, and that every box has arrived
  2. Clear and protect the floor where the furniture will be built
  3. Check the parts against the instructions before starting
  4. Assemble each item, adjusting doors, drawers and hinges
  5. Fix tall and heavy items to the wall with the supplied anti-tip kit or suitable fixings
  6. Flatten and gather the packaging, and take it away if agreed

Furniture assembly: what is included

Usually included

  • Assembling the agreed items
  • Adjusting doors, drawers and hinges
  • Fixing to the wall with the supplied anti-tip kit

Usually not included — agree it separately

  • Collecting the furniture from the shop
  • Packaging removal, unless agreed and the assembler holds a waste collection permit
  • Missing or damaged parts, which the retailer replaces
  • Wiring in built-in lights beyond plugging them in
  • Cutting worktops or altering units to fit

Materials and who supplies them

  • The furniture and its fittings — yours
  • Wall fixings suited to the wall where the supplied ones are not — the assembler’s
  • Power tools, levels and hand tools — the assembler’s

How long it takes

An hour for a small item such as a chest of drawers; a day for a room of large wardrobes with sliding doors, and longer if parts are missing.

When to book

Book assembly for the day after delivery so any missing or damaged parts can be reported quickly.

Furniture assembly: the rules in Ireland

What the official sources say, checked against them on the date shown. A summary, not legal advice — follow the link to read the rule itself.

  • Taking packaging or old furniture away for payment needs a waste collection permit, and a householder should give waste only to a permitted collector. Ask for the permit number before agreeing to removal.

Applies to: the handyman who removes waste, and the householder

What furniture assembly costs, and why

What jobs on Talqero came to

Not enough comparable jobs yet to publish a range here. Talqero shows a price range only once at least five comparable jobs, agreed prices or offers exist — a range from fewer would describe a handful of jobs, not the market. Post your job and compare the offers you get.

What affects the price

  • Number of items and how complex they are
  • Large wardrobes, sliding doors, beds with storage and corner units
  • Fixing to the wall, and the wall type
  • Stairs and access to the room
  • Packaging removal

Paperwork to ask for at the end

  • Leave the assembly instructions and spare fittings with the furniture

Safety

  • Tall furniture, drawers and TV units should be fixed to the wall: the CCPC warns that furniture a child climbs on can tip and cause serious harm
  • Keep heavy items in the lowest drawers and shelves
  • Large wardrobes are two-person lifts when stood up
  • Do not let anyone drill a fixing without checking for pipes and cables

Questions to ask a tradesperson

  • Do you price per item or by the hour?
  • Will you fix tall furniture to the wall?
  • Can you take the packaging away, and do you hold a waste permit?
  • What happens if a part is missing?

What you can do yourself

A chest of drawers or a bedside locker is easy DIY with patience; large sliding wardrobes and storage beds are much quicker with an experienced assembler and a second pair of hands.

What to put in your task

  • What needs assembling?
  • How many items in total?
  • Which shop or brand is it from, and the product names if you have them?
  • Does anything need fixing to the wall?
  • Do you need the packaging taken away?

Photos that help

  • The boxes, showing the product labels
  • The room and wall where the furniture will go

Questions about furniture assembly

Does furniture assembly need a licence in Ireland?

No licence is required for this work in Ireland (source: www.cru.ie). Ask instead for references and photographs of similar jobs.

Do I really need to fix a chest of drawers to the wall?

If there are young children in the home, yes. A child climbing open drawers can tip a chest over. The CCPC advises securing such furniture to the wall with straps or brackets.

What if a part is missing?

The assembler checks the parts first and builds what they can. Missing or damaged parts come from the retailer, and a return visit to finish may be charged.

Can you put a wardrobe together in a small room?

Usually, but tall wardrobes are often built lying down and then stood up, which needs space and ceiling height. Measure the room height and diagonal before ordering.
