House removals: what the job involves
Moving the contents of a home from one address to another — with packing, dismantling and storage if you want them — by a crew that surveys the volume, protects your furniture and floors, and places everything in the right rooms at the other end.
Also asked for as: movers · removal company · moving company · house move · packing service
How the job is usually done
- A survey, in person or by video, or a written inventory, to measure volume and spot awkward items.
- A written quote listing what is included: packing, materials, dismantling, insurance and storage.
- Packing — by the crew a day or two before, or by you with supplied boxes.
- Moving day: protecting floors and doorways, dismantling beds and wardrobes, and loading.
- Transport, and storage in between if the dates do not line up.
- Unloading into the right rooms, reassembling furniture and removing packing materials if agreed.
House removals: what is included
Usually included
- Loading, transport and unloading
- Dismantling and reassembling standard beds and wardrobes, usually
- Furniture blankets and floor protection
Usually not included — agree it separately
- Disconnecting and connecting washing machines, cookers or gas appliances
- Taking down TVs, curtain poles and wall fixings
- Taking unwanted items away as waste (needs a waste collection permit)
- Pianos, safes and hot tubs, unless quoted
- Cleaning the old or new home
Materials and who supplies them
- Boxes, tape, paper, wardrobe cartons and mattress covers — supplied by the removals company, often charged
- Vehicles, trolleys, blankets and straps — the company’s own
How long it takes
A day for most local moves of a two- or three-bed home; packing adds a day, and long distances, stairs, apartments without lifts or a key handover delay can push into a second day.
When to book
The end of the month, Fridays and summer weekends book up first; a mid-week, mid-month date is easiest to get and gives the crew more flexibility.
House removals: the rules in Ireland
What the official sources say, checked against them on the date shown. A summary, not legal advice — follow the link to read the rule itself.
Carrying other people’s goods for hire or reward in a vehicle over 3.5 tonnes gross weight needs a Road Transport Operator Licence; within Ireland, a van at or under 3.5 tonnes does not.
Applies to: the removals company
Road Transport Acts; Department of Transport, Road Transport Operator Licensing Unit · gov.ie · Checked 9 October 2026
Since 21 May 2022, an operator carrying goods internationally for hire or reward in a light commercial vehicle over 2.5 tonnes must hold an international Road Transport Operator Licence — relevant to a move to Northern Ireland, Britain or further.
Applies to: the removals company or van operator
Regulation (EU) 2020/1055; Department of Transport · gov.ie · Checked 9 October 2026
Before you agree, the trader must give the total price or how it will be calculated, and any extra charges; the service must be supplied with reasonable care and skill, and as described.

Consumer Rights Act 2022; Citizens Information · citizensinformation.ie · Checked 9 October 2026
Taking unwanted items or rubbish away for reward is waste collection and needs a waste collection permit — a removal van without one may move your belongings but may not take your waste.

What house removals costs, and why
What jobs on Talqero came to
Not enough comparable jobs yet to publish a range here. Talqero shows a price range only once at least five comparable jobs, agreed prices or offers exist — a range from fewer would describe a handful of jobs, not the market. Post your job and compare the offers you get.
What affects the price
- Volume: the number of rooms and how full they are
- Distance between the two addresses
- Packing service, materials, and dismantling furniture
- Access at both ends: stairs, lifts, long carries and parking
- Storage between moves
- Weekend, month-end and Friday dates
Paperwork to ask for at the end
- A written quote with the inventory or volume and everything included
- Details of the cover for your belongings in transit and storage, and its exclusions
- A storage contract and inventory, if goods are stored
Safety
- Keep children and pets out of the way of the crew and the ramp on moving day.
- Carry medicines, documents, keys, chargers and valuables yourself.
- A gas cooker or gas fire must be disconnected and reconnected by a Registered Gas Installer.
- Fridges and freezers should stand upright for a few hours after the move before switching on.
House removals: before you hire
Questions to ask a tradesperson
- What cover do my belongings have in transit, and what is excluded?
- Is the price fixed, or by the hour — and what happens if we wait for keys?
- Is dismantling and reassembly included?
- Are packing materials included or charged?
- If storage is needed, where is it and is it insured?
What you can do yourself
Packing your own boxes saves a lot, and a small apartment move with friends and a hired van is common; heavy furniture, stairs and long distances are where a crew earns its keep.
What to put in your task
- How big is the home you are moving from?
- How far are you moving?
- What help do you want?
- What is access like at either end?
- Any large or special items?
Photos that help
- Each room from the doorway, wardrobes open
- Large or fragile items
- Stairs, lifts and the street outside at both addresses, if you can

Questions about house removals
Does house removals need a licence in Ireland?
No licence is required for this work in Ireland (source: www.cru.ie). Ask instead for references and photographs of similar jobs.
How far in advance should I book a removals company?
A few weeks for a house move, and earlier in summer or at month-end. Closing dates often move, so ask how the company handles a change of date.
Am I covered if something is broken?
Only as far as the company’s cover and terms say. Ask what cover they carry for goods in transit, what limits apply per item, and whether items you pack yourself are covered. Check your own home insurance too.
Can the removal company take away things I do not want?
Only if they hold a waste collection permit. Otherwise, arrange a permitted collector, a charity collection or a trip to the recycling centre before the move.
