TV mounting: what the job involves
Mounting a television on the wall on a bracket rated for it, level and at a comfortable height, and hiding the cables in trunking or behind the wall. Adding a new socket behind the TV is electrical work for a registered electrician.
Also asked for as: tv wall mounting · tv bracket fitting · hang tv on wall · hide tv cables · tv installer
How the job is usually done
- Agree the position and height, and check the wall type and what is behind it
- Check the bracket against the TV’s VESA pattern and weight
- Scan for cables and pipes, then mark and drill the fixings for the wall type
- Fix the bracket and attach the arms to the TV
- Hang the TV, level it and lock it to the bracket
- Route and conceal cables in trunking or through the wall, and test the picture and devices
TV mounting: what is included
Usually included
- Fixing the bracket with fixings suited to the wall
- Hanging and levelling the TV
- Tidying cables in surface trunking
Usually not included — agree it separately
- A new or moved socket — Restricted Electrical Works for a registered electrician
- Chasing cables into the wall and making good, unless agreed
- Mounting over a fireplace or stove without checking heat and the chimney breast
- Aerial, satellite or network cabling
- The bracket, unless supplied by the installer
Materials and who supplies them
- Bracket — fixed, tilting or full-motion — either yours or supplied by the installer
- Fixings for the wall type, cable trunking and HDMI cables
- A soundbar bracket, if wanted
How long it takes
One to two hours for most TVs; a full-motion arm on plasterboard, concealing cables in the wall, or a soundbar add time.
TV mounting: the rules in Ireland
What the official sources say, checked against them on the date shown. A summary, not legal advice — follow the link to read the rule itself.
New sockets, new or extended circuits, fuse-board work and moving wiring are Restricted Electrical Works, which only a Registered Electrical Contractor may carry out and certify. A handyman can swap a like-for-like light fitting or faceplate only where that falls within minor works.

What jobs on Talqero came to
Not enough comparable jobs yet to publish a range here. Talqero shows a price range only once at least five comparable jobs, agreed prices or offers exist — a range from fewer would describe a handful of jobs, not the market. Post your job and compare the offers you get.
What affects the price
- Screen size and weight
- Bracket type: fixed, tilt or full-motion arm
- Wall type: block, brick, plasterboard or stud
- Concealing cables in trunking or inside the wall
- Mounting a soundbar or setting up devices
Paperwork to ask for at the end
- Leave the bracket’s instructions and the rated load
Safety
- A full-motion arm puts a large leverage load on the wall: on plasterboard it must be fixed into studs or with heavy-duty fixings rated for it
- Above a stove or open fire, heat and smoke damage TVs, and chimney breasts can be hollow or crumbly
- A TV on a stand or unit should be secured too: the CCPC warns that children pulling on a TV or unit can tip it over
- New sockets and moved wiring need a registered electrician, who issues a completion certificate

Questions to ask a tradesperson
- Will the bracket and fixings hold my TV on this wall?
- Is cable concealment included?
- Do you supply the bracket?
- Are you insured if the TV or wall is damaged?
What you can do yourself

- What size is the TV?
- What is the wall made of?
- Which kind of bracket do you want?
- How should the cables be hidden?

Questions about tv mounting
Does tv mounting need a licence in Ireland?
No licence is required for this work in Ireland (source: www.cru.ie). Ask instead for references and photographs of similar jobs.
Can a TV go on a plasterboard wall?
Yes, if the bracket is fixed into the timber or metal studs, or with heavy-duty plasterboard fixings rated for the load. Full-motion arms on plasterboard need particular care because they lever on the fixings.
Can the installer add a socket behind the TV?
Only if they are a Registered Electrical Contractor. A new socket is Restricted Electrical Works, so book an electrician, who will also issue a completion certificate.
Is it OK to mount a TV over the fireplace?
Over a gas fire or stove the heat rising off the chimney breast can damage the TV, and the viewing height is often too high. Check the TV maker’s guidance and the temperature above the fire first.
