Also asked for as: gas fire fitted · gas fire installation · gas stove installer · remove gas fire · gas fire service
How the job is usually done
- Inspect the fireplace, chimney or flue and decide which type of fire it can take: open-flued, balanced flue or flueless.
- Check for a back boiler or old appliance that must be removed and capped safely.
- Carry out flue tests (spillage and flow) and check ventilation requirements.
- Run or adapt gas pipework to the appliance and install it to the manufacturer’s instructions.
- Commission the fire, test for spillage and gas tightness, and fit or check the carbon monoxide alarm.
- Issue the Declaration of Conformance and show you how to use the fire safely.

Gas fire and stove installation: the rules in Ireland
What the official sources say, checked against them on the date shown. A summary, not legal advice — follow the link to read the rule itself.
Only a Registered Gas Installer may install, replace, alter, repair or service a gas appliance or gas pipework in a home, whether natural gas or LPG. Every RGI carries a photo ID card renewed each year, and can be checked on the register.

Energy (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act 2006; Register of Gas Installers of Ireland for the Commission for Regulation of Utilities · rgi.ie · Checked 9 October 2026
An RGI must issue a Declaration of Conformance (completion certificate) for all gas works and give the customer the original copy as soon as the work is finished. A service, safety check, repair or appliance fit is recorded on a Cert 3; a boiler replacement on a Cert 2.

What gas fire and stove installation costs, and why
What jobs on Talqero came to
Not enough comparable jobs yet to publish a range here. Talqero shows a price range only once at least five comparable jobs, agreed prices or offers exist — a range from fewer would describe a handful of jobs, not the market. Post your job and compare the offers you get.
What affects the price
- The type of fire and what the chimney or wall can take
- Condition of the flue, and whether sweeping or lining is needed first
- Length of the new gas supply run
- Removing an old back boiler
- VAT: work on a home is charged at the reduced 13.5% rate by a VAT-registered business, unless materials exceed two-thirds of the price; ask whether the quote includes it
- VAT: building work on a home is charged at the reduced rate of 13.5% by a VAT-registered business — unless the materials come to more than two-thirds of the price, when Revenue’s two-thirds rule applies the goods rate to the whole job. Ask whether a quote includes VAT.
Paperwork to ask for at the end
- Declaration of Conformance (Cert 3) for the appliance fit
- Notice plate for the hearth or flue where one is provided
- Manufacturer instructions and warranty
Safety
- A gas fire needs a working flue and, depending on type, a permanent air vent that must never be blocked.
- A carbon monoxide alarm in the room is essential, and expected by the Building Regulations for a new open-flued appliance.
- Have the chimney swept before a gas fire goes into an old open fireplace.

- Does this fire need an air vent in the room?
- Will you fit a carbon monoxide alarm?

What you can do yourself
Not a DIY job: fitting, moving or removing a gas fire is gas work for a Registered Gas Installer.
What to put in your task
- What do you want done?
- What is behind the fire now?
- Mains gas or LPG?
- Have you bought the fire already?
Photos that help
- The fireplace and existing fire
- The chimney or flue outside, including the top
- Where the gas pipe comes in near the fireplace

Questions about gas fire and stove installation
Does gas fire and stove installation need a licence in Ireland?
Yes. Registered Gas Installer (RGI), supervised by the Commission for Regulation of Utilities. Source: www.rgi.ie. Ask for the registration number and check it on the public register. Wording approved by Talqero; not yet reviewed by a solicitor.
Can I put a gas fire where there is no chimney?
Often yes, with a balanced-flue or flueless fire on an outside wall, subject to the installer’s checks on ventilation and room size.
Do gas fires need servicing?
Yes, they should be serviced regularly like a boiler, with a flue spillage test. A Declaration of Conformance should be left after each service.
What about my old back boiler?
Removing a back boiler means changing how the house is heated, so it is usually done with a new boiler. The RGI will cap off the gas safely.
