Oil boiler service and repair: what the job involves
Servicing, repairing or replacing an oil-fired boiler and burner, including the oil supply, filters and tank checks. Oil work has no statutory register in Ireland the way gas does, so experience, references and a combustion printout are what to check.
Also asked for as: oil burner service · boiler lockout · outdoor oil boiler · oil boiler repair · oil boiler replacement
How the job is usually done
- Ask about faults, lockouts, smells or soot, and check the oil level and tank.
- Run the boiler and take a combustion reading before stripping down.
- Clean the combustion chamber, baffles and heat exchanger, and replace the nozzle and oil filters.
- Check the burner, electrodes, photocell, pump pressure and flue.
- Reassemble, recommission and take a final combustion analysis printout.
- Check the tank, fire valve and pipe for leaks and advise on anything that needs work.
Oil boiler service and repair: what is included
Usually included
- Cleaning and inspection of boiler and burner
- New nozzle and filter at a service
- Combustion analysis with a printout
Usually not included — agree it separately
- Major parts such as a burner motor, pump or control box
- Replacing the oil tank or bunding
- Clearing a tank of water or sludge
Materials and who supplies them
- Nozzle, filters and seals, supplied by the technician
- Major parts and replacement boiler, quoted separately
How long it takes
A service takes about an hour, a little more for an outdoor boiler; a repair depends on the part, and a replacement usually takes one to two days.
When to book
Service the boiler in summer, and order oil before winter prices and delivery waits rise.

Questions about oil boiler service and repair
Does oil boiler service and repair need a licence in Ireland?
No licence is required for this work in Ireland (source: www.cru.ie). Ask instead for references and photographs of similar jobs.
Does an oil boiler need a registered installer?
There is no statutory register for oil boiler technicians in Ireland, unlike gas. Some technicians hold voluntary registrations; ask about experience with your make and for a combustion printout.
Is there a grant for a new oil boiler?
No. SEAI does not grant-aid oil boilers. Its heat pump grant includes support for removing an oil boiler, and the heating controls grant can apply on its own.
Why does my boiler keep locking out?
Common causes are a blocked filter or nozzle, water in the oil, a failing photocell or low oil. A technician can find which with a quick test.
