Chimneys and stoves

Stove installation

Fitting a solid fuel or wood stove, hearth and flue. A gas stove is a separate, restricted job.

Whether this needs a licence in Ireland

Ireland

No licence required

Taken from the statute below; not yet reviewed by a lawyer

Stove installation: what the job involves

Fitting a solid fuel or wood-burning stove into a fireplace or a new flue: surveying the chimney, lining it if needed, building a compliant hearth, connecting the stove and providing air supply, and fitting a carbon monoxide alarm. A boiler stove is also plumbed into the heating.

Also asked for as: stove fitter · wood burning stove · multi fuel stove · boiler stove · install stove in fireplace

How the job is usually done

  1. Survey the fireplace, chimney and room: flue size and condition, hearth depth, ventilation, and the stove’s output for the room.
  2. Sweep and smoke-test the existing flue.
  3. Line the chimney where needed, with a liner sized to the stove outlet.
  4. Build or adapt the hearth and fireplace to Part J clearances, and fit a register plate.
  5. Fit and connect the stove, and provide any permanent air vent it needs.
  6. For a boiler stove, connect it to the cylinder and radiators with the safety pipework the manufacturer requires.
  7. Fit the carbon monoxide alarm and the notice plate, light the stove and commission it.

Stove installation: what is included

Usually included

  • Survey and smoke test
  • Fitting the stove, flue pipe and register plate
  • Hearth and fireplace work as agreed
  • Carbon monoxide alarm and notice plate
  • Commissioning and showing how to use it

Usually not included — agree it separately

  • Chimney lining, often priced separately once the flue is surveyed
  • Scaffolding to the chimney stack
  • Plumbing a boiler stove into the heating, unless agreed
  • Removing an old back boiler or range
  • Plastering and decoration around the fireplace

Materials and who supplies them

  • The stove: chosen by the customer, often supplied by the installer
  • Liner, flue pipe, register plate and cowl: supplied by the installer
  • Hearth stone or slab and fireproof board: either side, agreed in advance
  • Carbon monoxide alarm: supplied by the installer

How long it takes

One to two days for a room heater into a sound flue; longer with lining, a new hearth, or a boiler stove plumbed into the heating.

When to book

Book in spring or summer: installers fill up from September, and chimney work is easier in dry weather.

Stove installation: the rules in Ireland

What the official sources say, checked against them on the date shown. A summary, not legal advice — follow the link to read the rule itself.

  • When a new or replacement open-flued appliance (other than one only for cooking) is installed, a carbon monoxide alarm to I.S. EN 50291 should be fitted in the same room; a notice plate is required where a hearth, flue or chimney is provided.

Applies to: the installer and the homeowner

    Building Regulations Part J, Technical Guidance Document J · gov.ie · Checked 9 October 2026

  • The hearth, the fireplace and the flue must meet Part J of the Building Regulations for heat-producing appliances: construction, clearances to combustible materials, flue size and air supply.

Applies to: the installer and the homeowner

    Building Regulations Part J, Technical Guidance Document J · gov.ie · Checked 9 October 2026

  • Solid fuel local space heaters placed on the EU market since 1 January 2022 must meet ecodesign limits for efficiency and emissions.

Applies to: manufacturers and sellers of new stoves

    Commission Regulation (EU) 2015/1185 · eur-lex.europa.eu · Checked 9 October 2026

  • Smoky (bituminous) coal is banned nationwide and only approved solid fuels from registered producers may be sold; the retail, online and advertised sale of turf and the burning of waste timber are banned. From 1 September 2026, wood logs and other 100% biomass fuel sold must have a moisture content of 20% or less.

Applies to: fuel sellers, and householders in what they burn

    Air Pollution Act 1987 (Solid Fuels) Regulations 2022, S.I. 529 of 2022 · irishstatutebook.ie · Checked 9 October 2026

  • Chimney and solid fuel stove work is not a restricted trade in Ireland; there is no statutory register. Gas fires and gas stoves are different and reserved to Registered Gas Installers.

Applies to: the homeowner choosing a contractor

    Commission for Regulation of Utilities · cru.ie · Checked 9 October 2026

  • A gas stove or gas fire may only be installed by a Registered Gas Installer, who must leave a Declaration of Conformance.

Applies to: anyone installing a gas appliance

Register of Gas Installers of Ireland · rgi.ie · Checked 9 October 2026

  • A VAT-registered contractor charges the reduced rate of 13.5% on installation work to a home, subject to Revenue’s two-thirds rule when the stove or liner is most of the price.

What stove installation costs, and why

What jobs on Talqero came to

Not enough comparable jobs yet to publish a range here. Talqero shows a price range only once at least five comparable jobs, agreed prices or offers exist — a range from fewer would describe a handful of jobs, not the market. Post your job and compare the offers you get.

What affects the price

  • Condition and size of the flue, and whether it needs lining
  • Room heater or boiler stove connected to the heating
  • Hearth and fireplace alterations
  • Scaffolding or a platform to reach the chimney stack
  • Who supplies the stove
  • A new twin-wall flue system where there is no chimney
  • VAT: building work on a home is charged at the reduced rate of 13.5% by a VAT-registered business — unless the materials come to more than two-thirds of the price, when Revenue’s two-thirds rule applies the goods rate to the whole job. Ask whether a quote includes VAT.

Paperwork to ask for at the end

  • A notice plate fixed near the stove or flue recording the flue and hearth details
  • A commissioning record and the stove’s manual
  • Manufacturer guarantees for the stove and liner
  • Proof the carbon monoxide alarm was fitted

Safety

  • A carbon monoxide alarm is essential in the room with the stove; test it monthly.
  • A stove needs air: never block the permanent vent the installer fits.
  • Burn only dry wood or approved fuels — wet wood tars the flue and smoky fuels are banned.
  • A boiler stove must never be fired without water in the system.

Stove installation: before you hire

Questions to ask a tradesperson

  • Will you survey and smoke-test the flue first?
  • Does the price include a liner, the hearth and a CO alarm?
  • Will you leave a notice plate and commissioning record?
  • Is the stove right for the size of the room?
  • Is VAT included?

What you can do yourself

Not a DIY job: hearth, flue and air supply are covered by building regulations, and a badly fitted stove can kill with carbon monoxide.

What to put in your task

  • What kind of stove do you want?
  • Where will the stove go?
  • What condition is the chimney in?
  • Have you bought the stove?
  • How many storeys is the house?

Photos that help

  • The fireplace, with a tape measure across the opening
  • The hearth in front of it
  • The chimney stack outside, showing pots and the roof around it
  • The hot press or boiler, if a boiler stove is planned

Questions about stove installation

Does stove installation need a licence in Ireland?

No licence is required for this work in Ireland (source: www.cru.ie). Ask instead for references and photographs of similar jobs.

Do I need a liner for a stove?

Usually. Most older chimneys are too big or too leaky for a stove to draw well, and a liner sized to the stove gives a steady draw and keeps tar off the masonry. The installer decides after a smoke test.

Is there an SEAI grant for a stove?

No. SEAI home energy grants cover insulation, heat pumps, solar and heating controls, not solid fuel stoves.

Do I need planning permission for a stove?

Fitting a stove into an existing chimney normally does not. A new flue through the roof of a protected structure or in an architectural conservation area may; check with your council.

What can I burn in it?

Dry wood and approved solid fuels. Smoky coal is banned nationwide, turf may no longer be sold in shops, online or by advertisement, and wood sold from September 2026 must have 20% moisture or less.
