Drain unblocking: what the job involves
Clearing a blocked sink, toilet, bath or shower waste, or an outside gully or manhole, with plungers, rods or a high-pressure jet. A drain that keeps blocking usually needs a camera to find out why.
Also asked for as: blocked drain · blocked toilet · blocked sink · drain cleaning · blocked gully
How the job is usually done
- Ask where the water is backing up and whether more than one fitting is affected.
- Lift manhole covers to find where the blockage is: if the chamber is full, it is further down the line.
- Clear the blockage with a plunger, hand auger, drain rods or a jetter, depending on its position.
- Flush the run with water and check every fitting drains freely.
- Clean the area, and explain the likely cause: fat, wipes, roots or a collapsed pipe.
- Recommend a CCTV survey if the line has blocked before or shows signs of damage.
Drain unblocking: what is included
Usually included
- Locating and clearing the blockage
- Flushing and testing the drain afterwards
- Cleaning up around gullies and chambers
Usually not included — agree it separately
- A CCTV survey and written report, priced separately
- Repairs to a cracked or collapsed pipe
- A blockage in the public sewer, which Uisce Éireann clears
Materials and who supplies them
- Rods, plungers, augers and jetting equipment: the drainage contractor brings these
- A replacement trap or gully grid if the old one is broken
How long it takes
Usually under two hours; longer if the blockage is far down the line, needs jetting, or the manholes are buried or sealed.
When to book
Autumn leaves block outside gullies; clearing them before winter rain avoids flooding at the back door.
Drain unblocking: the rules in Ireland
What the official sources say, checked against them on the date shown. A summary, not legal advice — follow the link to read the rule itself.

Plumbing is not a restricted trade in Ireland: there is no statutory register of plumbers. The restricted works are electrical (Safe Electric) and gas (RGI), and they often sit next to plumbing.

What drain unblocking costs, and why
What jobs on Talqero came to
Not enough comparable jobs yet to publish a range here. Talqero shows a price range only once at least five comparable jobs, agreed prices or offers exist — a range from fewer would describe a handful of jobs, not the market. Post your job and compare the offers you get.
What affects the price
- Inside (sink, toilet, shower) or outside (gully, manhole, main line)
- How far down the line the blockage is, and whether manholes can be reached
- Whether a jetter is needed to cut through fat or roots
- Out-of-hours call-out
- A camera inspection to confirm the cause
- VAT: building work on a home is charged at the reduced rate of 13.5% by a VAT-registered business — unless the materials come to more than two-thirds of the price, when Revenue’s two-thirds rule applies the goods rate to the whole job. Ask whether a quote includes VAT.
Paperwork to ask for at the end
- An invoice stating where the blockage was and what caused it
- Photographs or video from inside the drain, if a camera was used
Safety
- Do not pour caustic drain cleaner into a blocked fitting and then plunge it: it can splash back and burn.
- Keep children away from an open manhole; covers are heavy and the chamber may be deep.
- Never go into a manhole or a septic tank: sewer gases can kill in seconds.
Drain unblocking: before you hire
Questions to ask a tradesperson
- Is the call-out charge included if you clear it quickly?
- If it blocks again within a few weeks, do you come back?
- Can you show me where the blockage was and what caused it?
- If it is in the public sewer, will you tell me so I can call Uisce Éireann?
What you can do yourself
A plunger or a sink trap you can unscrew is safe DIY; rodding a main drain or opening a deep chamber is better left to someone with the right kit.
What to put in your task
- Where is the blockage?
- Is the house on mains sewer or a septic tank?
- Has this drain blocked before?
- Can you find and lift the manhole covers?
Photos that help
- The blocked fitting with standing water
- The outside gully nearest the kitchen
- Each manhole with the cover lifted, if safe to do so

Questions about drain unblocking
Does drain unblocking need a licence in Ireland?
No licence is required for this work in Ireland (source: www.cru.ie). Ask instead for references and photographs of similar jobs.
Who pays if the blockage is in the public sewer?
Uisce Éireann clears blockages in the public sewer. The private drain up to and including your connection is your responsibility, so a contractor usually confirms which side the blockage is on first.
Why does my toilet bubble when the bath drains?
That usually means a partial blockage or poor venting in the shared waste or main drain. It is worth clearing before it blocks fully.
Are flushable wipes safe?
No. Wipes do not break down like toilet paper and are one of the most common causes of blocked drains in Ireland. Only toilet paper should go down the toilet.
