CV writing: the rules in Ireland

What the official sources say, checked against them on the date shown. A summary, not legal advice — follow the link to read the rule itself.

  • A writer or translator who receives documents containing personal data — CVs, certificates, medical or legal papers — must process them lawfully, keep them secure, use them only for the job and not keep them longer than needed. Where they act on behalf of a business, a written processing agreement is required.

Applies to: the writer or translator, and the business that hires them

    General Data Protection Regulation (EU) 2016/679, Articles 5, 28 and 32 · eur-lex.europa.eu · Checked 10 October 2026

  • The author of a written work — the copywriter, CV writer or translator — is the first owner of its copyright, unless they write it as an employee in the course of employment. Paying a freelancer does not by itself transfer the copyright to the customer.

What cv writing costs, and why

What jobs on Talqero came to

Not enough comparable jobs yet to publish a range here. Talqero shows a price range only once at least five comparable jobs, agreed prices or offers exist — a range from fewer would describe a handful of jobs, not the market. Post your job and compare the offers you get.

What affects the price

  • Career level and length of experience
  • Which documents: CV, cover letter, LinkedIn profile, application form
  • A career change or a return to work after a gap
  • Specialist formats such as academic or public-sector applications
  • The deadline

What you should get at the end

  • The final CV in editable (Word or Google Doc) and PDF formats
  • The cover letter and LinkedIn text, if included
  • Written confirmation of how long the writer will keep your personal data, and that it will then be deleted

What the provider should hand over

  • Send the final files in editable and PDF formats
  • Explain how to tailor the CV for each application
  • Delete the customer’s documents and notes at the end of the agreed period, and say so

Safety

  • Everything on the CV must be true: claiming qualifications or jobs you do not have can cost you the job later if it is discovered
  • Leave out your PPS number, date of birth, marital status and photo — Irish employers do not need them on a CV
  • Send documents through a secure channel and ask the writer to delete them after the job

CV writing: before you hire

Questions to ask before you hire

  • Will we talk through my experience, or do you work from my old CV only?
  • How many revisions are included?
  • Will I get an editable file I can update myself?
  • How will you keep and delete my personal information?
  • Have you written CVs for my sector?

What you can do yourself

Most people can improve their own CV by cutting it to two pages, leading with results rather than duties, and tailoring it to each advert; a writer helps most with career changes and senior roles.

What to put in your task

  • What do you need?
  • Which describes your career stage?
  • How would you like to talk to the writer?
  • Are you applying for public-sector or academic jobs?
  • Do you have an application deadline?

Photos that help

  • Your current CV, however rough
  • Two or three job adverts you want to apply for
  • Your LinkedIn profile link, if you have one
  • A list of qualifications and training, with dates

Questions about cv writing

Does cv writing need a licence in Ireland?

No licence is required for this work in Ireland (source: www.irishstatutebook.ie). Ask instead for references and photographs of similar jobs.

How long should an Irish CV be?

Usually two pages, or one for a student or graduate. Senior and academic CVs can be longer. Irish employers generally do not expect a photo, date of birth or marital status on a CV.

Can a CV writer make my experience sound better?

A good writer presents your real experience at its best — clearer, with results and numbers — but must not invent jobs, qualifications or achievements. An untrue CV can cost you the job later if it is discovered.

What happens to my personal data?

The writer handles your personal information and must keep it secure, use it only for your CV and not keep it longer than needed under the GDPR. Ask how long they keep files and ask them to delete everything once you are happy with the result.
