Computer and phone lessons: what the job involves

Patient one-to-one help learning to use a computer, tablet or smartphone: email, video calls, online banking and government services, photos, and spotting scams. Lessons can be at home or by video call, at the learner’s own pace.

Also asked for as: computer lessons for beginners · computer lessons for seniors · smartphone lessons · iPad lessons · learn online banking

How the job is usually done

  1. Find out what the learner wants to do and what devices they have.
  2. Agree the number and length of lessons, and where: at home, or by video call once the basics work.
  3. Start with the learner’s own device, setting it up so it is easy to see and use.
  4. Teach one task at a time, with the learner doing it themselves, and leave written step-by-step notes.
  5. Cover staying safe: scam calls, texts and emails, strong passwords, and never sharing codes.
  6. Review progress and practise again at the next lesson.

What computer and phone lessons costs, and why

What jobs on Talqero came to

Not enough comparable jobs yet to publish a range here. Talqero shows a price range only once at least five comparable jobs, agreed prices or offers exist — a range from fewer would describe a handful of jobs, not the market. Post your job and compare the offers you get.

What affects the price

  • Number and length of lessons
  • At home or by video call, and travel
  • One learner or a small group
  • Whether set-up of the device is needed first

What you should get at the end

  • Written step-by-step notes for each task covered
  • A list of the accounts set up, kept by the learner, with no passwords written by the tutor

What the provider should hand over

  • Leave notes for each task covered
  • Suggest practice before the next lesson
  • Make sure the learner knows how to check whether a message is a scam

Safety

  • A tutor should never ask for or note down your banking PIN, card details or one-time codes; you type them yourself.
  • Banks, Revenue and Gardaí never ask for passwords or codes by phone, text or email.
  • When teaching an older or vulnerable learner, a family member may want to be present at the first lesson.

Computer and phone lessons: before you hire

Questions to ask before you hire

  • Can we go at my own pace and repeat things?
  • Will you leave written notes?
  • Will you show me how to spot scams?
  • Can a family member sit in?

What you can do yourself

Libraries and community groups often run free beginner sessions, which suit learners happy in a group.

What to put in your task

  • Which device is the lesson on?
  • What would you like to learn?
  • How many lessons are you thinking of?
  • Where would you like the lessons?

Photos that help

  • The device and its model, from the settings screen or label
  • Any message or screen that is confusing the learner

Questions about computer and phone lessons

Does computer and phone lessons need a licence in Ireland?

No licence is required for this work in Ireland (source: www.irishstatutebook.ie). Ask instead for references and photographs of similar jobs.

Is one lesson enough?

For one task on a device you already use, sometimes. Most beginners find a few weekly lessons with practice in between works best, because skills stick when repeated.

Will the tutor handle my banking?

No. A good tutor shows you how and lets you type your own passwords and codes. They should never ask for your PIN, card details or one-time codes.

Can lessons be done by video call?

Yes, once the device can make a video call. Many learners start with a home visit and continue by video.
