Accessibility audit: what the job involves

Checking a website or app against the WCAG accessibility guidelines, by automated scans and by hand with a keyboard and screen readers, and reporting what stops disabled and older people using it, with fixes in priority order. Online shops and public bodies have legal duties here.

Also asked for as: WCAG audit · European Accessibility Act compliance · website accessibility check · accessibility statement · EAA website

How the job is usually done

  1. Agree the scope: which pages, journeys such as checkout or booking, and the WCAG level to test against.
  2. Run automated checks to catch common problems such as contrast, missing labels and alt text.
  3. Test key journeys by hand with a keyboard, a screen reader and zoom, on desktop and phone.
  4. Record each issue with where it is, who it affects, the WCAG criterion and how to fix it.
  5. Report findings in priority order, and help draft the accessibility information or statement.
  6. Re-test after fixes, if agreed.

Accessibility audit: what is included

Usually included

  • Testing of the agreed pages and journeys
  • A written report with each issue, its WCAG criterion and a suggested fix
  • A summary in plain English for the business
  • Help drafting accessibility information or a statement

Usually not included — agree it separately

  • Fixing the issues, unless quoted as development work
  • Testing with panels of disabled users, unless agreed
  • Legal advice on whether the business is in scope of the law
  • Accessibility of documents such as PDFs, unless included

Materials and who supplies them

  • Testing tools and screen readers, supplied by the auditor
  • Test accounts and access to staging, supplied by the business

How long it takes

An audit of a small site usually takes a few days; large sites, many templates, apps and re-testing take longer.

When to book

Audit before a redesign or relaunch is finalised, when fixes cost least.

Accessibility audit: the rules in Ireland

What the official sources say, checked against them on the date shown. A summary, not legal advice — follow the link to read the rule itself.

  • Since 28 June 2025, e-commerce services offered to consumers, such as online shops and booking sites, must meet accessibility requirements and the business must publish information on how the service meets them. Microenterprises providing services, those with fewer than 10 staff and turnover or balance sheet not over two million euro, are exempt.

Applies to: the business selling online to consumers

European Accessibility Act (Directive (EU) 2019/882), transposed by S.I. No. 636 of 2023, regulations 5 and 14; enforced by the CCPC for e-commerce · irishstatutebook.ie · Checked 10 October 2026

  • The CCPC lists e-commerce services provided to consumers in the EU, including online marketplaces and retail websites, among the services covered by the European Accessibility Act.

Applies to: the business selling online to consumers

    Competition and Consumer Protection Commission · ccpc.ie · Checked 10 October 2026

  • The CCPC confirms that the European Accessibility Act’s requirements do not apply to microenterprises providing services, though accessibility remains good practice and widens the market.

Applies to: small businesses selling online

  • Websites and apps of public sector bodies must meet the accessibility requirements and publish an accessibility statement.

What accessibility audit costs, and why

What jobs on Talqero came to

Not enough comparable jobs yet to publish a range here. Talqero shows a price range only once at least five comparable jobs, agreed prices or offers exist — a range from fewer would describe a handful of jobs, not the market. Post your job and compare the offers you get.

What affects the price

  • Number of page templates and user journeys tested
  • Website only, or mobile apps too
  • Depth: automated scan only or full manual testing
  • Whether re-testing after fixes is included
  • Need for a formal accessibility statement

What you should get at the end

  • Audit report listing issues by priority with the WCAG criteria and fixes
  • Accessibility information or statement, drafted for the business to publish
  • Re-test report, if agreed

What the provider should hand over

  • Present the report and walk the team through the highest priority issues
  • Hand over the draft accessibility information for the business to publish

Safety

  • Automated tools find only part of the problems; ask for manual testing of the journeys that matter.
  • Avoid “overlay” widgets sold as a one-click fix; they do not make an inaccessible site meet the requirements.

Accessibility audit: before you hire

Questions to ask before you hire

  • Do you test by hand with screen readers, or only with automated tools?
  • Which version of WCAG and which level will you test against?
  • Will the report tell my developer exactly how to fix each issue?
  • Can you help with the accessibility statement?

What you can do yourself

Free browser tools can catch common issues such as low contrast and missing alt text, and trying the site with only a keyboard shows a lot, but a full audit needs manual screen reader testing.

What to put in your task

  • Why do you want the audit?
  • What should be tested?
  • Roughly how many different page types does the site have?
  • Do you also want the issues fixed?

Photos that help

  • The website or app address and the pages that matter most
  • Any accessibility complaint or feedback received
  • Your current accessibility statement, if there is one

Questions about accessibility audit

Does accessibility audit need a licence in Ireland?

No licence is required for this work in Ireland (source: www.irishstatutebook.ie). Ask instead for references and photographs of similar jobs.

Is my business covered by the European Accessibility Act?

It covers e-commerce services for consumers, among other products and services, from 28 June 2025 under S.I. No. 636 of 2023. Microenterprises providing services, with fewer than 10 staff and small turnover, are exempt. If unsure, check the CCPC guidance or get legal advice.

What is WCAG?

The Web Content Accessibility Guidelines, published by the W3C, are the technical checklist most audits use. The current version is WCAG 2.2, and level AA is the usual target; the European harmonised standard builds on the same criteria.

Can an accessibility widget make my site compliant?

No tool added on top can fix the underlying code, headings, labels and keyboard access. An audit finds the real problems so your developer can fix them in the site itself.
