Stove installation: what the job involves

Fitting a solid fuel or wood-burning stove into a fireplace or a new flue: surveying the chimney, lining it if needed, building a compliant hearth, connecting the stove and providing air supply, and fitting a carbon monoxide alarm. A boiler stove is also plumbed into the heating.

How long it takes: One to two days for a room heater into a sound flue; longer with lining, a new hearth, or a boiler stove plumbed into the heating.

What jobs on Talqero came to

Not enough comparable jobs yet to publish a range here. Talqero shows a price range only once at least five comparable jobs, agreed prices or offers exist — a range from fewer would describe a handful of jobs, not the market. Post your job and compare the offers you get.

What affects the price

  • Condition and size of the flue, and whether it needs lining
  • Room heater or boiler stove connected to the heating
  • Hearth and fireplace alterations
  • Scaffolding or a platform to reach the chimney stack
  • Who supplies the stove
  • A new twin-wall flue system where there is no chimney
  • VAT: building work on a home is charged at the reduced rate of 13.5% by a VAT-registered business — unless the materials come to more than two-thirds of the price, when Revenue’s two-thirds rule applies the goods rate to the whole job. Ask whether a quote includes VAT.

County Wicklow: what the figures say

  • 41.1% of homes in County Wicklow are heated by oil — above the national figure of 38.9%, the 23rd highest of the 26 counties.

In oil-heated homes a stove or open fire is often the second heat source; since 2022 only approved fuels may be sold, and from September 2026 wood must be below 20% moisture.

Rules and grants for stove installation

The rules in Ireland

Installing a stove brings building-regulation requirements, including a carbon monoxide alarm, and only approved solid fuels may be sold.

  • Technical Guidance Document J: when a new or replacement open-flued appliance (other than one only for cooking) is installed, a carbon monoxide alarm to I.S. EN 50291 should be fitted in the room and in each bedroom or within 5 m of the bedroom door; a notice plate is required when a hearth, flue or chimney is provided.
  • Under the Solid Fuel Regulations 2022, smoky (bituminous) coal is banned nationwide and only approved fuels from registered producers may be sold. The selling of turf and the burning of waste timber are banned.
  • From 1 September 2026, wood logs and other 100% biomass fuel must have a moisture content of 20% or less.

What to ask before you choose

  • Will you survey and smoke-test the flue first?
  • Does the price include the liner, the hearth and a CO alarm?
  • Will you leave a notice plate and commissioning record?
  • Is VAT included?

What the work usually involves

  • Chimney sweeping
  • Chimney lining
  • Stove installation
  • Smoke and draught problems

What to put in your task

  • Open fire or stove, and what you burn
  • When it was last swept
  • For a stove: the room and the existing fireplace
  • Photos of the fireplace and the chimney from outside
