Skip hire: what the job involves
A skip delivered to your driveway or the road, filled by you over a few days, then collected and taken for sorting at an authorised facility. A skip on a public road needs the council’s permit where parking is restricted, and some waste is never allowed in a skip.
Also asked for as: mini skip · skip bags · builders skip · skip permit
How the job is usually done
- Choose a skip size for the job, and say what kind of waste is going in.
- Decide where it goes: a driveway, or the road with a council permit where needed.
- The skip company delivers it, ideally on boards to protect paving.
- You fill it, level and below the rim, keeping banned items out.
- On the road, it must be lit and marked as the permit requires.
- The company collects it, takes it to an authorised facility and gives a docket.
Skip hire: what is included
Usually included
- Delivery, collection and lawful disposal of permitted waste
- Hire for an agreed number of days
Usually not included — agree it separately
- Loading the skip
- The council skip permit, unless the company arranges it
- Mattresses, electrical items, tyres, plasterboard, asbestos and hazardous waste
- Extra days on hire
Materials and who supplies them
- The skip, and lights or cones for a road placement — the skip company’s own
How long it takes
Usually hired for a few days to a week; a road permit commonly needs several working days’ notice.
When to book
Book a few days ahead, and longer if a road permit is needed; spring and summer weekends are the busiest.
Skip hire: the rules in Ireland
What the official sources say, checked against them on the date shown. A summary, not legal advice — follow the link to read the rule itself.
Nobody other than a local authority may collect waste for reward without a waste collection permit. Permits are issued by the National Waste Collection Permit Office and list the waste types, vehicles and areas covered; collectors must show the permit number on their vehicles.
Applies to: the person or company taking the waste away
Waste Management Act 1996, section 34; National Waste Collection Permit Office · revisedacts.lawreform.ie · Checked 9 October 2026
A person may not transfer control of waste to anybody other than an appropriate person — in practice, a permitted collector or an authorised facility. If waste handed to an unpermitted collector is dumped and traced back, the householder can be held responsible.
Applies to: the householder

Councils make bye-laws controlling skips on public roads: a permit is usually needed where parking is restricted, with conditions on siting, lighting, marking and prompt removal. In Dublin City, for example, the application must reach the council seven working days before delivery.
Applies to: the skip company or the householder applying
Roads Act 1993, section 72; the local council’s skip bye-laws · revisedacts.lawreform.ie · Checked 9 October 2026
Dublin City Council requires a permit for a skip on a public road where parking restrictions apply; no permit is needed on a road without restrictions if the skip is placed safely and at least 3 metres of road is kept clear.
Applies to: the householder or skip company

Asbestos — often in old sheds, garage roofs, soffits, floor tiles and pipe lagging — may only be removed and handled as the asbestos regulations require, and goes as hazardous waste to an authorised facility, never into a general skip.
Applies to: anybody removing or disposing of it
Safety, Health and Welfare at Work (Exposure to Asbestos) Regulations 2006 (as amended); Health and Safety Authority · hsa.ie · Checked 9 October 2026
Paperwork to ask for at the end
- A docket from the skip company with its waste collection permit number
- The council skip permit, if the skip is on the road
Safety
- Do not overfill — a skip loaded above the rim is unsafe to lift, and the company may refuse to take it until it is levelled.
- A skip on the road must be lit and marked at night.
- Keep children off and out of skips.
- A loaded skip on tarmac, cobble-lock or a thin slab can crack it; ask for boards.

Questions to ask a tradesperson
- What is your waste collection permit number?
- Do you arrange the council skip permit, and is it included?
- What items are banned or charged extra?

Filling the skip yourself is normal; keep mattresses, electrical items, tyres, gas cylinders, paint and anything that might be asbestos out of it.
What to put in your task
- What size skip do you think you need?
- What will go in it?
- Where will the skip go?
- How long do you need it?

Questions about skip hire
Does skip hire need a licence in Ireland?
Yes. Waste Collection Permit, supervised by the National Waste Collection Permit Office. Source: www.nwcpo.ie. Ask for the registration number and check it on the public register. Wording approved by Talqero; not yet reviewed by a solicitor.
Do I need a permit for a skip outside my house?
Not on your own driveway. On a public road, councils require a permit where parking is restricted, and the rules and notice periods vary by council. Many skip companies apply for you; ask.
What can’t go in a skip?
Usually mattresses, fridges and other electrical items, tyres, gas cylinders, paint, chemicals and asbestos. Many companies want plasterboard and heavy soil or rubble separated. Ask for the company’s list before you fill it.
Skip or a man with a van?
A skip suits waste that builds up over a few days, such as a renovation. For a single load that is ready to go, a permitted collector who loads it for you is often simpler and needs no permit or space.
