EV charger installation: what the job involves
Fitting a wall-mounted electric car charger on its own circuit from the fuse board, usually on the driveway or in a garage, with earthing and protection suited to charging a car outdoors. SEAI grant-aids home chargers fitted by a registered electrician.
How long it takes: Usually half a day when the board is near the parking space; a full day or more with long cable runs, trenching or a board upgrade.

What ev charger installation in Balrothery costs, and why
What jobs on Talqero came to
Not enough comparable jobs yet to publish a range here. Talqero shows a price range only once at least five comparable jobs, agreed prices or offers exist — a range from fewer would describe a handful of jobs, not the market. Post your job and compare the offers you get.
What affects the price
- Distance from the fuse board to the parking space and how the cable gets there
- The charger model and whether you supply it
- Whether the fuse board needs upgrading or load management is needed
- Groundworks: trenching and reinstating paving
- Integration with solar panels or a battery
- VAT: work on a home is charged at the reduced 13.5% rate by a VAT-registered contractor, unless materials exceed two-thirds of the price; ask whether the quote includes it
- VAT: building work on a home is charged at the reduced rate of 13.5% by a VAT-registered business — unless the materials come to more than two-thirds of the price, when Revenue’s two-thirds rule applies the goods rate to the whole job. Ask whether a quote includes VAT.
County Dublin: what the figures say
47.9% of households in County Dublin live in homes built before 1981 — above the national figure of 40.7%, and the 1st highest share of the 26 counties.
Houses of that age were wired to older standards, so adding circuits there often starts with testing the existing installation and, frequently, a new fuse board with RCD protection.

Rules and grants for ev charger installation
The rules in Ireland
Most electrical work in a home is Restricted Electrical Works and must be done by a Registered Electrical Contractor, who gives you a Completion Certificate.
- Restricted Electrical Works include new installations, fuse-board (distribution board) changes, new or replacement circuits, and inspection and testing. Minor like-for-like work such as replacing a switch is excluded.
- The requirement comes from the Electricity Regulation Act 1999 and S.I. 264 of 2013, in force since 1 October 2013, and is run for the Commission for Regulation of Utilities by Safe Electric Ireland.
- A Registered Electrical Contractor must issue a Completion Certificate for all work except minor works. Ask for it as soon as the job is done; insurers and solicitors ask for it later.
- Check a contractor on the Safe Electric register before work starts.
What to ask before you choose
- What is your Safe Electric registration number?
- Will you issue a Completion Certificate for this work?
- Does the price include testing, making good and removing old fittings?
- Will the existing installation need work before you add to it?
- Is VAT included?
What the work usually involves
- New sockets, switches and light fittings
- Rewiring an older house, room by room or all at once
- Replacing a fuse board and adding RCD protection
- Finding a fault that keeps tripping the power
- EV charger points and outdoor lighting
What to put in your task
- What is wrong or what you want added, room by room
- Roughly how old the house and the wiring are
- Whether the power trips, and when it started
- Photos of the fuse board and the area where the work is
