EV charger installation: what the job involves
Fitting a wall-mounted electric car charger on its own circuit from the fuse board, usually on the driveway or in a garage, with earthing and protection suited to charging a car outdoors. SEAI grant-aids home chargers fitted by a registered electrician.
Also asked for as: home car charger · electric car charger fitted · SEAI charger grant · EV charger electrician · EV charge point at home
How the job is usually done
- Survey the fuse board, the main supply, the earthing arrangement and the route from the board to the parking space.
- Agree the charger model, its position and whether it needs to work with solar panels or a time-of-use tariff.
- Apply for the SEAI grant before the work if you intend to claim it.
- Run a dedicated cable and fit a new protective device at the board, with load management if the supply is tight.
- Mount the charger, connect it, and set up earthing protection as the charger and the National Rules require.
- Test, commission the charger with its app, and issue the Completion Certificate and grant paperwork.
EV charger installation: what is included
Usually included
- A dedicated circuit from the fuse board to the charger
- Mounting and commissioning the charger and its app
- Testing and the Completion Certificate
Usually not included — agree it separately
- A fuse board upgrade if the existing one has no space or protection
- Trenching across a lawn or driveway and reinstating paving
- An increase in the supply capacity from ESB Networks
Materials and who supplies them
- The charger, often supplied by the installer so it is on the SEAI Smart Charger Register
- Armoured or suitable cable, protective devices and fixings, supplied by the electrician
How long it takes
Usually half a day when the board is near the parking space; a full day or more with long cable runs, trenching or a board upgrade.
When to book
Fit the charger before the car arrives, and apply for the grant before work starts if you intend to claim it.
EV charger installation: the rules in Ireland
What the official sources say, checked against them on the date shown. A summary, not legal advice — follow the link to read the rule itself.
New circuits, changes to a distribution board (fuse board), work in special locations such as bathrooms and outdoors, and inspection and testing are Restricted Electrical Works: only a Registered Electrical Contractor may carry them out. Like-for-like replacement of a switch or socket is excluded as minor work.
Applies to: the electrician, and the homeowner who engages one

What ev charger installation costs, and why
What jobs on Talqero came to
Not enough comparable jobs yet to publish a range here. Talqero shows a price range only once at least five comparable jobs, agreed prices or offers exist — a range from fewer would describe a handful of jobs, not the market. Post your job and compare the offers you get.
What affects the price
- Distance from the fuse board to the parking space and how the cable gets there
- The charger model and whether you supply it
- Whether the fuse board needs upgrading or load management is needed
- Groundworks: trenching and reinstating paving
- Integration with solar panels or a battery
- VAT: work on a home is charged at the reduced 13.5% rate by a VAT-registered contractor, unless materials exceed two-thirds of the price; ask whether the quote includes it
- VAT: building work on a home is charged at the reduced rate of 13.5% by a VAT-registered business — unless the materials come to more than two-thirds of the price, when Revenue’s two-thirds rule applies the goods rate to the whole job. Ask whether a quote includes VAT.
Paperwork to ask for at the end
- Safe Electric Completion Certificate for the charger circuit
- Charger warranty and app login
- The grant claim paperwork if claiming SEAI’s grant
Safety
- Never charge a car from an extension lead run out of a window; a dedicated circuit is designed for hours of full load.
- Keep the charger and its cable clear of where cars turn and where the lawnmower goes.
EV charger installation: before you hire
Questions to ask a tradesperson
- Are you a Safe Electric registered contractor who can sign the SEAI grant paperwork?
- Is the charger on SEAI’s Smart Charger Register?
- Does my supply need load management with an electric shower or heat pump?
- Does the price include any trenching or making good?
What you can do yourself
Not a DIY job: a new circuit to an outdoor charger is Restricted Electrical Works, and the grant requires a registered electrician.
What to put in your task
- How far is the parking space from the fuse board?
- How would a cable get to the parking space?
- Do you already have a charger?
- Do you want to claim the SEAI grant?
- Do you have, or plan, solar panels?
Photos that help
- The fuse board with the cover open
- The meter cabinet outside the house
- The wall where you want the charger, with the parking space in shot
- The route between the board and that wall, inside and out

Questions about ev charger installation
Does ev charger installation need a licence in Ireland?
Yes. Registered Electrical Contractor (Safe Electric), supervised by the Commission for Regulation of Utilities. Source: www.safeelectric.ie. Ask for the registration number and check it on the public register. Wording approved by Talqero; not yet reviewed by a solicitor.
Do I need to own an electric car to get the grant?
No. SEAI’s home charger grant is open to homeowners with off-street parking whether or not they own an EV yet, as long as no home charger grant has been claimed at the property before.
Can I get a charger if I live in an apartment?
Usually through the management company, which can apply for SEAI’s apartment charging grant for shared infrastructure; residents can then add a charge point to that network.
Will a charger overload my supply?
Not if it is set up properly. The electrician checks the maximum demand of the house and, where the car, an electric shower and a heat pump could run together, fits load management so the charger slows down instead of tripping.
