Solar panels: what the job involves
Fitting solar photovoltaic panels on the roof (or on the ground nearby), with an inverter, often a battery, and a connection to the house supply, so the home makes some of its own electricity and can sell the surplus to its supplier. A registered electrician must connect it and ESB Networks must be told.
How long it takes: Usually one to two days on site; longer for a split array across two roofs, a battery in an awkward place or a fuse board change.

What solar panels in Piltown costs, and why
What jobs on Talqero came to
Not enough comparable jobs yet to publish a range here. Talqero shows a price range only once at least five comparable jobs, agreed prices or offers exist — a range from fewer would describe a handful of jobs, not the market. Post your job and compare the offers you get.
What affects the price
- System size in kWp and the number of panels
- A battery, and its capacity
- Roof type, height and access, and whether scaffolding is needed
- Cable run from the roof to the inverter and fuse board
- Condition of the existing fuse board
- Extras: immersion diverter, EV charger readiness, bird mesh
- VAT: building work on a home is charged at the reduced rate of 13.5% by a VAT-registered business — unless the materials come to more than two-thirds of the price, when Revenue’s two-thirds rule applies the goods rate to the whole job. Ask whether a quote includes VAT.
County Kilkenny: what the figures say
40.5% of households in County Kilkenny live in homes built before 1981 — close to the national figure of 40.7%, and the 10th highest share of the 26 counties.
Homes of that age were built before modern insulation standards and usually gain most from attic and wall insulation — and SEAI’s attic and wall grants cover homes built and occupied before 2011.

Rules and grants for solar panels
The rules in Ireland
Grant-aided insulation must be done by a contractor on SEAI’s register, after grant approval, with a BER afterwards.
- Use a contractor on SEAI’s register and get grant approval before any work starts — work begun before approval is not grant-aided.
- The grant must be drawn down within eight months of the offer, and a BER by a registered assessor after the works is required (SEAI contributes €50 towards it).
- Since 27 July 2026, external wall insulation of up to 15 cm is exempt from planning permission.
What to ask before you choose
- Are you on SEAI’s contractor register for this measure?
- Have I got grant approval in place before you start?
- What ventilation will the house need afterwards?
- Who arranges the BER after the works?
- Is VAT included?
What the work usually involves
- Internal dry-lining of external walls
- Attic and cavity insulation
- Draught-proofing
- Work towards a better BER
What to put in your task
- The type and rough age of the house
- Which rooms or walls
- Your current BER, if you have one
- Whether you are applying for a grant

Construction as a whole. The CSO does not publish enterprise counts per trade at county level, so this figure is not a count of any one trade.
