Internal doors: what the job involves

Hanging new internal doors, easing doors that stick or will not close, and replacing frames (linings), architrave and saddle boards. Older Irish houses rarely have square openings, so most of the skill is in fitting a straight door to a crooked frame.

Also asked for as: hang internal doors · door hanging · carpenter for doors · fit new doors · door sticking

How the job is usually done

  1. Measure each opening and check the lining for square and level, and whether doors are standard or need to be made to size.
  2. Agree the door style, whether pre-finished or to be painted, the ironmongery and any fire or glazing requirement.
  3. Take off the old door, and the lining and architrave if they are being replaced.
  4. Fit new linings and door stops where needed, plumb and packed.
  5. Trim the door to the opening with an even gap, then cut in the hinges and the latch and fit handles.
  6. Adjust the stops so the door closes cleanly, refit or fit new architrave, and fill ready for painting.

Internal doors: what is included

Usually included

  • Hanging the doors with hinges, latch and handles
  • Trimming to fit, including an allowance for floor coverings
  • Adjusting stops and keeps
  • Taking away the old doors, if agreed

Usually not included — agree it separately

  • Painting or finishing doors that are not pre-finished
  • New floor coverings that change the door clearance
  • Plastering around a replaced lining
  • Locks on internal doors beyond standard latches

Materials and who supplies them

  • Doors: hollow-core, solid-core, oak or painted, sometimes fire-rated
  • Linings, stops and architrave
  • Hinges, latches, handles
  • Often the customer chooses and buys the doors and handles; the carpenter supplies fixings

How long it takes

Around one to two hours per door for a straightforward hang; longer per door when linings, architrave or out-of-square openings are involved.

When to book

Hang doors after the flooring is decided, so the gap underneath suits the final floor.

Internal doors: the rules in Ireland

What the official sources say, checked against them on the date shown. A summary, not legal advice — follow the link to read the rule itself.

  • In a house with a floor more than 4.5 m above ground level — usually a three-storey house or one with an attic conversion — the stairway generally has to be protected, with fire-resisting doors onto it. Replacing those doors with ordinary ones can undo that protection.

What internal doors costs, and why

What jobs on Talqero came to

Not enough comparable jobs yet to publish a range here. Talqero shows a price range only once at least five comparable jobs, agreed prices or offers exist — a range from fewer would describe a handful of jobs, not the market. Post your job and compare the offers you get.

What affects the price

  • Number of doors
  • New linings and architrave or the existing frames reused
  • Out-of-square openings in older houses
  • Pre-finished doors versus doors to be painted
  • Fire doors, glazed doors, pocket or bi-fold doors
  • VAT: building work on a home is charged at the reduced rate of 13.5% by a VAT-registered business — unless the materials come to more than two-thirds of the price, when Revenue’s two-thirds rule applies the goods rate to the whole job. Ask whether a quote includes VAT.

Paperwork to ask for at the end

  • For fire doors: the door’s certification label and the fitting instructions
  • An itemised invoice

Safety

  • Fire doors only work with the right frame, hinges, gaps and intumescent seals; they should be fitted by somebody who follows the manufacturer’s instructions.
  • Glazed panels in doors should use safety glass.
  • Allow enough gap under doors for ventilation and new floor coverings.

Internal doors: before you hire

Questions to ask a tradesperson

  • Will you need to replace the frames, or can the doors fit the existing ones?
  • Are any of these doors fire doors, and will you fit them to the manufacturer’s instructions?
  • Does your price include handles, hinges and architrave?
  • Will you take the old doors away?

What you can do yourself

Easing a sticking door or tightening hinges is a fair DIY job; hanging a new door well takes practice and the right tools, and fire doors should be left to a carpenter.

What to put in your task

  • How many doors?
  • What do you need done?
  • Have you bought the doors already?
  • What type of doors are they?
  • Does the house have a converted attic or three storeys?

Photos that help

  • Each door and frame, straight on
  • The gap at the top and bottom of a door that sticks
  • The floor at each threshold
  • The new doors, if bought already

Questions about internal doors

Does internal doors need a licence in Ireland?

No licence is required for this work in Ireland (source: www.cru.ie). Ask instead for references and photographs of similar jobs.

Can new doors fit my old frames?

Usually, if the frames are sound. Older openings are often not standard sizes, so doors are trimmed to fit or, in some cases, made to measure.

Do I need fire doors?

In most two-storey houses internal doors do not have to be fire doors. In a three-storey house or one with an attic conversion, doors onto the stairway generally do. A carpenter or your designer can confirm for your house.

Should I buy pre-finished doors?

Pre-finished doors save painting time and look consistent, but they must be handled carefully and cannot easily be trimmed by a lot. Painted doors can be adjusted more and touched up later.
