Intercom and video doorbell: what the job involves

Fitting a video doorbell for a house or an audio or video door-entry intercom for a house or apartment block, with chimes, indoor screens and phone app set-up. A doorbell alone is not licensed work, but door-entry systems that release a lock may fall under the PSA’s access control sector.

How the job is usually done

  1. Check the door: existing bell wiring and transformer, Wi-Fi strength, mounting surface and angle.
  2. Agree the system: battery or wired doorbell, or an intercom with indoor stations and door release.
  3. Fit the transformer or power supply, run cable to the door and to indoor stations.
  4. Mount the doorbell or panel, connect chime, lock release and indoor units.
  5. Set up the app, motion zones and privacy zones so only your property is recorded.
  6. Test calls and door release from every station and hand over.

  • Installing access control systems for others is a PSA-licensed sector. A plain video doorbell is not access control, but a door-entry system that controls an electric lock or gate can be, so ask the installer whether their PSA access control licence covers it.

  • A home camera or smart doorbell that only records inside the boundary of your own property falls within the household exemption. Once it records a public footpath, the street or a neighbour’s property, the household exemption no longer applies and the owner has data protection duties, so the Data Protection Commission advises privacy masking or re-angling.

  • Adding a new circuit or a new connection at the fuse board, for example a dedicated supply for a panel, recorder or doorbell transformer, is Restricted Electrical Works for a Registered Electrical Contractor.
