External wall insulation: what the job involves
Wrapping the outside of a house in insulation boards and a new render finish, so solid or hollow-block walls stop losing heat without touching the rooms inside. Often called the external wrap, it is the biggest single fabric upgrade for an older home.
How long it takes: Usually two to four weeks with scaffolding up; longer in wet weather, because render cannot go on in rain or frost.

What external wall insulation in Borris costs, and why
What jobs on Talqero came to
Not enough comparable jobs yet to publish a range here. Talqero shows a price range only once at least five comparable jobs, agreed prices or offers exist — a range from fewer would describe a handful of jobs, not the market. Post your job and compare the offers you get.
What affects the price
- Wall area and the number of corners, windows and doors
- Board thickness and material
- Scaffolding and access, especially on terraces and tight sites
- Eaves, sills, meters and fixtures that need detailing or moving
- Finish: standard render, brick-slip or a decorative finish
- Repairs to the existing walls before boards go on
- VAT: building work on a home is charged at the reduced rate of 13.5% by a VAT-registered business — unless the materials come to more than two-thirds of the price, when Revenue’s two-thirds rule applies the goods rate to the whole job. Ask whether a quote includes VAT.
County Carlow: what the figures say
37.4% of households in County Carlow live in homes built before 1981 — below the national figure of 40.7%, and the 17th highest share of the 26 counties.
Homes of that age were built before modern insulation standards and usually gain most from attic and wall insulation — and SEAI’s attic and wall grants cover homes built and occupied before 2011.

Rules and grants for external wall insulation
The rules in Ireland
Grant-aided insulation must be done by a contractor on SEAI’s register, after grant approval, with a BER afterwards.
- Use a contractor on SEAI’s register and get grant approval before any work starts — work begun before approval is not grant-aided.
- The grant must be drawn down within eight months of the offer, and a BER by a registered assessor after the works is required (SEAI contributes €50 towards it).
- Since 27 July 2026, external wall insulation of up to 15 cm is exempt from planning permission.
What to ask before you choose
- Are you on SEAI’s contractor register for this measure?
- Have I got grant approval in place before you start?
- What ventilation will the house need afterwards?
- Who arranges the BER after the works?
- Is VAT included?
What the work usually involves
- Internal dry-lining of external walls
- Attic and cavity insulation
- Draught-proofing
- Work towards a better BER
What to put in your task
- The type and rough age of the house
- Which rooms or walls
- Your current BER, if you have one
- Whether you are applying for a grant
