Carpet fitting: what the job involves

Fitting carpet and underlay in rooms, on stairs and landings: gripper rods round the edges, underlay laid and taped, carpet stretched, seamed and trimmed, and threshold strips at the doors. Stairs take the longest and show the quality of the fitter most.

How long it takes: A few hours for a room; most of a day for stairs and landing, and longer for patterned carpet that has to be matched.

What carpet fitting in Kilmuckridge costs, and why

What jobs on Talqero came to

Not enough comparable jobs yet to publish a range here. Talqero shows a price range only once at least five comparable jobs, agreed prices or offers exist — a range from fewer would describe a handful of jobs, not the market. Post your job and compare the offers you get.

What affects the price

Area and the number of rooms
Stairs, winders and landings
Patterned or striped carpet that must be matched
Lifting old carpet and moving furniture
Supplying the carpet or fitting the customer’s own
Doors that need trimming
VAT: building work on a home is charged at the reduced rate of 13.5% by a VAT-registered business — unless the materials come to more than two-thirds of the price, when Revenue’s two-thirds rule applies the goods rate to the whole job. Ask whether a quote includes VAT.

What to ask before you choose

What preparation is included, and what if the subfloor needs levelling?
How will you waterproof the wet areas?
Who removes the old floor and the waste?
