Rules and grants for photography and video work

The rules in Ireland

Most photography and video needs no licence, but flying a drone does: the operator must be registered with the Irish Aviation Authority, and the remote pilot needs the competency for the category flown.

  • Drone operators in Ireland register with the Irish Aviation Authority, under the EU drone rules; the registration number is shown on the drone.
  • Remote pilots need the training and competency the IAA sets for the category they fly in, and some areas are restricted geographic zones.
  • Ask for the operator registration number and check it with the IAA before the shoot.

How long it usually takes

  • A shoot: hours to a day on location.
  • Edited photos or video: usually days to a few weeks afterwards.

What to ask before you choose

  • Will you assign the copyright in what you make to me in writing, or give me a written licence — and for which uses?
  • What will you hand over at the end: source files, code, logins and accounts, in my own name?
  • Will you keep what I share with you confidential, and agree that in writing?
  • How many edited images, or how long a video, and in which formats?
  • For drone work: what is your IAA operator registration number?

Questions about hiring a photographer or videographer

Can I use the photos however I want?

The photographer owns the copyright unless it is assigned to you in writing (Copyright and Related Rights Act 2000, ss. 23 and 120). Agree the licence or assignment, and the uses it covers, before you accept.

Does a drone operator need to be registered?

Yes. Drone operators in Ireland must register with the Irish Aviation Authority, and remote pilots need the competency for the category they fly in. Ask for the operator registration number and check it with the IAA at iaa.ie.

When will I get the finished files?

Agree the delivery date, the number of edited images or the video length, and the file formats, in the conversation before you accept.
