What electricians in Mountcharles cost, and why

What jobs on Talqero came to

Not enough comparable jobs yet to publish a range here. Talqero shows a price range only once at least five comparable jobs, agreed prices or offers exist — a range from fewer would describe a handful of jobs, not the market. Post your job and compare the offers you get.

What affects the price

  • Scope: a few points on an existing circuit, a new circuit, a fuse-board change or a rewire
  • The state of the existing installation, which testing reveals
  • Chasing walls and ceilings, and making good the plaster afterwards
  • Access: attics, under floors, finished rooms with no lifted boards
  • Testing and the Completion Certificate, which a proper quote includes
  • VAT: building work on a home is charged at the reduced rate of 13.5% by a VAT-registered business — unless the materials come to more than two-thirds of the price, when Revenue’s two-thirds rule applies the goods rate to the whole job. Ask whether a quote includes VAT.

Rules and grants for electrical work

The rules in Ireland

Most electrical work in a home is Restricted Electrical Works and must be done by a Registered Electrical Contractor, who gives you a Completion Certificate.

  • Restricted Electrical Works include new installations, fuse-board (distribution board) changes, new or replacement circuits, and inspection and testing. Minor like-for-like work such as replacing a switch is excluded.
  • The requirement comes from the Electricity Regulation Act 1999 and S.I. 264 of 2013, in force since 1 October 2013, and is run for the Commission for Regulation of Utilities by Safe Electric Ireland.
  • A Registered Electrical Contractor must issue a Completion Certificate for all work except minor works. Ask for it as soon as the job is done; insurers and solicitors ask for it later.
  • Check a contractor on the Safe Electric register before work starts.

Grants

SEAI’s solar electricity grant pays up to €1,800 towards solar panels, plus €600 for a battery, for homes built and occupied before 2025.

  • Solar PV: €700 per kWp up to 2 kWp, then €200 per additional kWp up to 4 kWp — at most €1,800.
  • A battery of 5 kWh or more: €600, so panels and a battery together are up to €2,400.
  • Use a contractor on SEAI’s register and get grant approval before any work starts — work begun before approval is not grant-aided.
  • The grant must be drawn down within eight months of the offer, and a BER by a registered assessor after the works is required (SEAI contributes €50 towards it).

How long it usually takes

  • A new socket or light: an hour or two.
  • A fuse-board change with testing: most of a day, with the power off for part of it.
  • A full rewire: about one to two weeks in an occupied house, before plastering and decorating.

What to ask before you choose

  • What is your Safe Electric registration number?
  • Will you issue a Completion Certificate for this work?
  • Does the price include testing, making good and removing old fittings?
  • Will the existing installation need work before you add to it?
  • Is VAT included?

Questions about hiring an electrician

How do I check that an electrician is registered?

Ask for their Safe Electric registration number and look it up on the register at safeelectric.ie. Most electrical work in a home is Restricted Electrical Works, which only a Registered Electrical Contractor may do, and they must give you a Completion Certificate when it is finished.

Will I get a certificate for the work?

Ask before the work starts. Agree in the conversation which certificate you expect at the end, so it is written down next to the price.

Do I pay through Talqero?

No. You agree the price with the electrician and pay them directly. Talqero takes no commission on the job.
