Hiring a chimney sweep in Monaghan

Chimney work is sweeping, lining, repairs, and fitting stoves. A stove needs a sound flue of the right size, usually a liner, a proper hearth and an air supply — the survey before the quote matters more than the stove.

The fuel rules changed in 2022 and again in 2026, which affects what you burn as much as what you install.

Rules and grants that apply in County Monaghan

The rules in Ireland

Installing a stove brings building-regulation requirements, including a carbon monoxide alarm, and only approved solid fuels may be sold.

Technical Guidance Document J: when a new or replacement open-flued appliance (other than one only for cooking) is installed, a carbon monoxide alarm to I.S. EN 50291 should be fitted in the room and in each bedroom or within 5 m of the bedroom door; a notice plate is required when a hearth, flue or chimney is provided.
Under the Solid Fuel Regulations 2022, smoky (bituminous) coal is banned nationwide and only approved fuels from registered producers may be sold. The selling of turf and the burning of waste timber are banned.
From 1 September 2026, wood logs and other 100% biomass fuel must have a moisture content of 20% or less.

What jobs on Talqero came to

Not enough comparable jobs yet to publish a range here. Talqero shows a price range only once at least five comparable jobs, agreed prices or offers exist — a range from fewer would describe a handful of jobs, not the market. Post your job and compare the offers you get.

What affects the price

The condition and size of the flue, and whether it needs lining
Hearth and fireplace alterations
Room heater or boiler stove connected to the heating
Scaffolding or access to the chimney stack
VAT: building work on a home is charged at the reduced rate of 13.5% by a VAT-registered business — unless the materials come to more than two-thirds of the price, when Revenue’s two-thirds rule applies the goods rate to the whole job. Ask whether a quote includes VAT.

How long it usually takes

A sweep: about an hour.
Lining a chimney: usually a day.
A stove installation: one to two days, more with lining.

What to ask before you choose

Will you survey and smoke-test the flue first?
Does the price include the liner, the hearth and a CO alarm?
Will you leave a notice plate and commissioning record?
Is VAT included?
